The Protection Compass: Classification and Means of Protection for Every Being

Protection CompassOverview

The Protection Compass is the part of iWell Guard that links the encyclopedia of beings with the knowledge of protection. For every being described here, it holds two things ready: a classification of how strongly its influence can reach according to tradition, and the means of protection that various cultures have set against it.

What makes it special is the cross-cultural view. Over thousands of years, people in Mesopotamia, in the Germanic north, in Egypt, in East Asia and everywhere else developed protective signs, protective objects and protective rituals, entirely independently of one another, and yet with remarkably similar underlying ideas.

The Protection Compass places these scattered traditions side by side. It adds nothing of its own. It orders what the sources and the cosmic information field record about a being.

How to use it

The Protection Compass can be filtered by four criteria: by culture, by class of being, by Influence Level and by means of protection.

You can start from a being you have encountered or that occupies your thoughts, and see which level is assigned to it and which means of protection tradition knows.

Conversely, you can start from a means of protection, such as salt or a protective rune, and read up on which kinds of beings it was used against. And you can simply browse by Influence Level to get a sense of how tradition orders the range.

Every entry leads further: to the detailed being page, to the page of the respective means of protection, and to the methodology that explains how the classification comes about.

The five levels of influence

To every being whose influence can be harmful, the Protection Compass assigns one of five levels. The levels describe how far the influence can reach according to tradition. They are not a prediction for the individual person, but a classification of what the sources and the cosmic information field ascribe to a being.

Level I, low influence, stands for things that disturb and tease without lasting consequence. Level II, noticeable influence, wears on well-being, sleep or mood. Level III, burdensome influence, reaches more clearly into health and vitality.

Level IV, severe influence, denotes a far-reaching intrusion that is seriously attested across several sources. Level V, far-reaching influence, is the gravest class in tradition.

Beings of light and protective beings carry no level. In the Protection Compass they stand on the side of protection, not of influence.

The six types of means of protection

Set against the beings are six types of means of protection. Each type has its own overview page.

Signs and symbols are protective signs that are affixed or worn, such as the Hamsa, the pentagram or protective runes.

Amulets and protective objects are worn items, from the talisman to the horseshoe, and the iWell Guard belongs to this old category as well. Protective substances and protective plants gather materials such as salt and iron and plants such as garlic or rowan.

Smudging and cleansing covers incense, sage, juniper and holy water, that is, substances meant to cleanse a room or a person. Sound and light collects bells, candles and protective fires. Protective rituals and invocation, finally, covers actions and words, from the protective circle through the banishing spell to the invocation of protective beings.

Methodology

The classification of a being arises from an examination within the cosmic information field, supplemented by the written tradition. Both are read against a fixed grid so that the classification remains comparable across all beings.

How this examination proceeds and how we separate mediumistic statements from scientific sources is described openly and transparently on the page on methodology. We document what tradition knows, and leave the judgment to you.

iWell Guard and protective traditions

The Protection Compass shows how many ways people across cultures have found to arm themselves. The iWell Guard brings these scattered protective traditions together in a single worn object. It is not an invention against tradition, but its modern bundling.

Anyone who would like to know how the iWell Guard is conceived and on what understanding it rests will find the detailed account there.
