Njihovo ime izhaja iz besede <em>drys<\/em>, gr\u0161ke besede za drevo in zlasti za dob; v teku izro\u010dila je postala splo\u0161no poimenovanje za nimfe dreves nasploh.<\/p><p>Kot prijazna, na dolo\u010den kraj vezana naravna bitja spadajo driade v vsakdanjo vero anti\u010dnega pode\u017eelja: pastirji, kmetje in popotniki so jim prina\u0161ali majhne darove, sveti gozdovi pa so bili pod njihovim varstvom. Poezija dojema driado kot \u017eeno drevesa: stopa iz debla, z listjem v laseh, v barvah lubja in listja.<\/p><p><strong>Delovanje<\/strong><\/p><p>Driade varujejo drevesa, gaje in izvire, ki tam izvirajo. Pode\u017eelsko prebivalstvo jih je \u0161telo za darovalke sence, vode in dobre rasti. Njihova temna stran je kazen za svetoskrunstvo: pri Ovidu driade to\u017eijo, ko Erizihton poseka sveti hrast boginje Demetre, ta pa ga kaznuje z neute\u0161ljivo lakoto.
