Encontram-se em praticamente todas as grandes civiliza\u00e7\u00f5es, desde as s\u00e9ries de conjura\u00e7\u00f5es babil\u00f4nicas, passando pelas tabuinhas de maldi\u00e7\u00e3o gregas e pelas Defixiones romanas, pela literatura medieval de grim\u00f3rios e pelos rituais hoodoo contempor\u00e2neos. A defesa contra maldi\u00e7\u00f5es est\u00e1 documentada h\u00e1 mil\u00eanios, com amuletos, contraconjura\u00e7\u00f5es, ritos de purifica\u00e7\u00e3o e rituais de prote\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p><div><p>A raiz etimol\u00f3gica do alem\u00e3o &#8220;<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"F\u00f3rmula verbal com a qual se pretende causar dano a uma pessoa ou coisa.\" tabindex=\"0\">Fluch<\/span>&#8221; reside no germ\u00e2nico flokan (bater, lamentar, conjurar) e est\u00e1 relacionado com o ingl\u00eas antigo flocan e o n\u00f3rdico antigo flokka. Compreende nove tabuinhas com conjura\u00e7\u00f5es e rituais que o sacerdote exorcista (ashipu) realizava para identificar e repelir uma maldi\u00e7\u00e3o suspeita.<\/p><p>Tzvi Abusch e Daniel Schwemer editaram criticamente toda a tradi\u00e7\u00e3o no Corpus of Mesopotamian Anti-Witchcraft Rituals em tr\u00eas volumes (2011-2020). Paralelamente existe a s\u00e9rie Surpu com rituais de dissolu\u00e7\u00e3o para componentes de maldi\u00e7\u00f5es cometidas inadvertidamente.<\/p><h3><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"\u00c9poca da cultura grega e romana, aproximadamente de 800 a.C. a 600 d.C.\" tabindex=\"0\">Mundo mediterr\u00e2neo<\/span> da Antiguidade<\/h3><p><span data-nosnippet>A partir do s\u00e9culo VI antes de Cristo est\u00e3o atestadas no espa\u00e7o grego tabuinhas de maldi\u00e7\u00e3o (katadesmoi). Mais de dois mil exemplares est\u00e3o catalogados, sobretudo de Atenas, da Sic\u00edlia e da costa do Mar Negro; a edi\u00e7\u00e3o de refer\u00eancia \u00e9 a Defixionum Tabellae de Auguste Audollent (1904), ampliada pelo Survey of Greek Defixiones de David Jordan (1985).<\/span><\/p><p>A tradi\u00e7\u00e3o romana adota o formato como defixiones ou tabellae devotionum; a c\u00e9lebre fonte de Bath em Brit\u00e2nia (Sulis Minerva) forneceu mais de 130 tabuinhas de chumbo, editadas por Roger Tomlin em 1988.<\/p><h3>Juda\u00edsmo, Cristianismo e Isl\u00e3<\/h3><p>A B\u00edblia hebraica conhece em Deuteron\u00f3mio 27-28 o mais extenso sistema de f\u00f3rmulas de maldi\u00e7\u00e3o do Antigo Testamento, e a tradi\u00e7\u00e3o rab\u00ednica discute na Mishn\u00e1 (Sanhedrin) e no <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Obra principal do juda\u00edsmo rab\u00ednico com a interpreta\u00e7\u00e3o da tradi\u00e7\u00e3o religiosa.\" tabindex=\"0\">Talmud<\/span> Bavli o efeito jur\u00eddico da maldi\u00e7\u00e3o. Na pr\u00e1tica antiga e medieval, frequentemente em l\u00edngua estrangeira ou l\u00edngua artificial (vogais gregas, <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"Sequ\u00eancias de letras inintelig\u00edveis nos papiros m\u00e1gicos helen\u00edsticos; consideradas nomes secretos carregados de poder, al\u00e9m da linguagem cotidiana.\">voces magicae<\/span>, pseudo-hebraico).<\/p>\n<p>Maldi\u00e7\u00e3o <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"F\u00f3rmula verbal com a qual se pretende causar dano a uma pessoa ou coisa.\" tabindex=\"0\">escrita<\/span>. A f\u00f3rmula da maldi\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 escrita em chumbo, cer\u00e2mica ou papel e depositada <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Pertencente a uma sequ\u00eancia de a\u00e7\u00e3o religiosa estabelecida.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritualmente<\/span>: em sepulturas, po\u00e7os, rios, sob soleiras de portas.
