Cavalca di notte su un cavallo nero, portando la propria testa sotto il braccio.<\/p><p>Quando si ferma e chiama un nome, il chiamato muore. Colpisce con una frusta ricavata da una spina dorsale umana e talvolta \u00e8 accompagnato da una carrozza nera (Coiste Bodhar).<\/p><p>A differenza della Banshee, che si limita ad annunciare, il Dullahan agisce attivamente: viene a prendere l&#8217;anima. La sua comparsa \u00e8 perentoria: le porte si aprono davanti a lui, il cavallo non ha bisogno di briglie. Unico mezzo di difesa: l&#8217;oro.<\/p><p>Una moneta d&#8217;oro gettata sul suo cammino lo costringe a fermarsi o a tornare indietro. Nella poesia medio-alto-tedesca si incontra, con il cavaliere verde di <em>Sir Gawain and the Green Knight<\/em>, una figura che raccoglie la propria testa mozzata e continua a parlare.<\/p><p>Le leggende tedesche conoscono fantasmi senza testa, e <em>The Legend of Sleepy Hollow<\/em> di Washington Irving del 1820 elabor\u00f2 tradizioni olandesi-americane in una delle versioni pi\u00f9 note in assoluto.<\/p><p>La ricerca ha proposto diverse interpretazioni. La perdita della testa contraddistingue un morto che non ha attraversato la normale soglia tra vita e morte, ossia un redivivo.<\/p><p>La testa come sede dell&#8217;identit\u00e0 e della ragione rende la sua assenza particolarmente perturbante. In alcune varianti irlandesi il Dullahan porta la propria testa sotto il braccio o sul pomello della sella, e si dice che il volto ghigni e riesca a vedere a grande distanza.<\/p><p>Nel caso irlandese \u00e8 caratteristica la connessione con l&#8217;annuncio della morte. Ci\u00f2 avvicina il Dullahan alla <a href=\"\/it\/banshee\/\">Banshee<\/a>, con la quale la tradizione popolare a volte lo fa apparire insieme.
