\u0161uma i lova, jedno od rijetkih balti\u010dkih bo\u017eanstava koje je poimeni\u010dno potvr\u0111eno ve\u0107 u 13. stolje\u0107u. Hipatijeva kronika spominje je u godini 1252. me\u0111u bogovima kojima je kralj Mindaugas ostao vjeran i nakon svog kr\u0161tenja.<\/p><p>Njezin profil je jasno odre\u0111en: ona je gospodarica \u0161ume i \u0161titi divlje \u017eivotinje, ne lovca. Istra\u017eivanja je prikazuju kao mladu, lijepu lovkinju koja se ne \u017eeli udati, i kao <em>vilkmerg\u0117<\/em>, vu\u010dju djevicu s vu\u010djom pratnjom. Vuk se smatra njezinom \u017eivotinjom; u tuma\u010denju kao \u017dvor\u016bna pridru\u017euje se i lova\u010dki pas. Ne postoji likovna tradicija iz predkr\u0161\u0107anskog doba, svi poznati prikazi su novovjekovni.<\/p><p><strong>Djelovanje<\/strong><\/p><p>Medeina vlada \u0161umom, stablima i divljim \u017eivotinjama. Njezina zada\u0107a nije da lovcu dovede lovinu, nego da \u0161titi \u0161umu i njezine stanovnike: mo\u017ee zbrisati trag, upozoriti divlja\u010d i zavesti lovca na krivi put. Kronika tako\u0111er bilje\u017ei da se Mindaugas nije usudio u\u0107i u \u0161umu na konju ako mu je zec presjekao put.<\/p><p>U 16. stolje\u0107u Jan \u0141asicki u svom popisu \u017eemaitskih bogova navodi Modeinu me\u0111u \u0161umskim bo\u017eanstvima; nakon toga trag se gubi, a obilje\u017eja bo\u017eice pre\u0161la su u legendarne likove folklora. Nacionalni romantizam 19. stolje\u0107a, imenom Teodor Narbutt, sna\u017eno je uljep\u0161ao oskudnu gra\u0111u, zbog \u010dega dana\u0161nja istra\u017eivanja strogo razdvajaju srednjovjekovne potvrde od kasnijeg dodavanja. Metodolo\u0161ki se smatra predstavnicom tipa gospodarice \u017eivotinja. Tri stvari treba razjasniti: srednjovjekovne potvrde valja strogo razdvojiti od Narbuttova uljep\u0161avanja. Njezin odnos prema \u017dvor\u016bna, bilo da je rije\u010d o istovjetnosti ili dvostrukom liku, ostaje otvoren kao i pitanje boga zeca i ratni\u010dke komponente kraljevskog kulta. Tako\u0111er je izvorima potvr\u0111en sustav predznaka: zec koji prije\u0111e put smatrao se upozorenjem da se toga dana treba izbjegavati \u0161uma. Uz to dolaze pravila pona\u0161anja litavske narodne predaje: umjerenost u lovu, po\u0161tivanje mladun\u010dadi, po\u0161tovanje prema svetim \u0161umarcima. Kronika mu prigovara da je tajno ostao vjeran starim bogovima, upravo onima koji su se odnosili na \u0161umu i lov, sr\u017e vladarskoga \u017eivota.<\/p><p><strong>Koliko je Medeina opasna?<\/strong><\/p><p>Za onoga koji po\u0161tuje \u0161umu, nimalo. Predaja ne poznaje napade na ljude, ali poznaje osuje\u0107ene lovove i zalutale putnike kao odgovor na nepo\u010dinstvo.
