Crvenkasto-sme\u0111a smola izlijeva se iz prirodnih pukotina ili urezanih rana na stablu i su\u0161i se na zraku u nepravilna zrna.<\/p><p>Prilikom paljenja na ugljenu smirna osloba\u0111a te\u017eak, blago gorak miris. Bila je sastavni dio postupka mumificiranja; u tom kontekstu simbolizira za\u0161titu mrtvog tijela na putu u zagrobni \u017eivot.<\/p><p>Smola je trebala tijelo pokojnika za\u0161tititi od raspadanja, ali i od djelovanja \u0161tetnih sila koje su, prema egipatskim vjerovanjima, ugro\u017eavale put prijelaza.<\/p>\n<p>U Starom zavjetu smirna se spominje na vi\u0161e mjesta, i kao mirisno ulje u Pjesmi nad pjesmama i kao sastojak svetog ulja pomazanja (Izlazak 30:23).<\/p><p>U Novom zavjetu mudraci s Istoka novoro\u0111enom Isusu donose zlato, tamjan i smirnu; teolozi smirnu tradicionalno tuma\u010de kao nagovje\u0161taj budu\u0107e patnje i smrti, jer je smirna u \u017eidovskoj i ranokr\u0161\u0107anskoj praksi bila povezana s pratnjom mrtvih.<\/p>\n<p>U gr\u010dko-rimskoj <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Razdoblje gr\u010dke i rimske kulture, otprilike od 800. pr. Kr. do 600. po. Kr.\" tabindex=\"0\">antici<\/span> smirna je bila poznata kao mirisna tvar, lijek i <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Konkretan predmet ili hrana koja se prinosi bo\u017eanstvu.\" tabindex=\"0\">\u017ertveni dar<\/span>. Dok tamjan u <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Preno\u0161enje znanja i pripovijesti kroz generacije.\" tabindex=\"0\">predaji<\/span> prije privla\u010di sveto i otvara prostor za bo\u017eansko, smirna se smatra smolom koja povla\u010di granice i zatvara ih.<\/p><p>Njome se zatvara tijelo pokojnika; prostor ili osoba koja se kadi njome dobiva vrstu nevidljive lju\u0161ture.<\/p>\n<p>U tuma\u010denju vi\u0161e tradicija smirna ima posebnu povezanost s granicom izme\u0111u \u017eivota i smrti. Ta granica smatra se opasnom to\u010dkom prolaznosti: \u0161tetne sile u mnogim predajama iskori\u0161tavaju trenutak umiranja ili prostor oko pokojnika da bi utjecale. Dim je te\u017ei od dima tamjana i dulje se odr\u017eava u prostoriji.<\/p><p>U liturgijskoj tradiciji pravoslavne i katoli\u010dke crkve smirna se koristi kao dio pripreme tamjana, iako je \u010disto ka\u0111enje smole smirne u zapadnom <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Utvr\u0111ena, ponavljaju\u0107a religijska radnja.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritu<\/span> rje\u0111e nego u isto\u010dnoj tradiciji.<\/p>\n<p>Za ku\u0107nu upotrebu u narodnoj predaji vrijede ista osnovna pravila kao za tamjan: svjesna namjera, pravi trenutak i sustavno ka\u0111enje cijele prostorije. Prema <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Preno\u0161enje znanja i pri\u010da kroz generacije.\" tabindex=\"0\">predaji<\/span>, smirna je posebno pogodna za prostorije koje su bile u dodiru s bole\u0161\u0107u ili smr\u0107u, te za \u010di\u0161\u0107enje nakon te\u0161kih doga\u0111aja.<\/p>\n<p>I ovdje vrijedi granica prakse: ka\u0111enje ne zamjenjuje sveobuhvatan koncept za\u0161tite.
