O seu nome deriva de <em>drys<\/em>, a palabra grega para \u00e1rbore e en particular para o carballo; co paso da tradici\u00f3n converteuse na denominaci\u00f3n xeral para as ninfas das \u00e1rbores en xeral.<\/p><p>Como seres da natureza amigables e ligados a un lugar, as dr\u00edades forman parte da crenza coti\u00e1 da vida rural na antig\u00fcidade: pastores, labregos e viaxeiros ofrec\u00edanlles pequenas d\u00e1divas, e os bosques sagrados estaban baixo a s\u00faa protecci\u00f3n. A poes\u00eda concibe a dr\u00edade como a muller da \u00e1rbore: sa\u00edndo do tronco, con follas no cabelo, nas cores da cortiza e da folla.<\/p><p><strong>Funci\u00f3n<\/strong><\/p><p>As dr\u00edades gardan \u00e1rbores, bosques sagrados e as fontes que al\u00ed nacen. Para as xentes do campo eran doadoras de sombra, auga e boa colleita. O seu reverso \u00e9 o castigo polo sacrilexio: en Ovidio, as dr\u00edades presentan a queixa cando Erisict\u00f3n corta o carballo sagrado de Dem\u00e9ter, e a deusa cast\u00edgao cunha fame insaciable.
