Ils sont d\u00e9crits unanimement comme des silhouettes guerri\u00e8res masculines v\u00eatues de rouge, chevauchant des chevaux rouges, portant arc et \u00e9p\u00e9e, et pouvant surgir subitement des fissures des rochers.<\/p><p>Les Tsen ne sont pas fondamentalement mal\u00e9fiques, mais ils sont dangereux et impr\u00e9visibles. Ils punissent imm\u00e9diatement tout manque de respect ; leurs territoires sont entour\u00e9s de r\u00e8gles de conduite strictes.<\/p><p>Nombre de Tsen ont \u00e9t\u00e9 li\u00e9s par serment lors de la p\u00e9n\u00e9tration bouddhiste au Tibet et employ\u00e9s comme esprits protecteurs (Dharmapalas) de certains monast\u00e8res. Un repr\u00e9sentant \u00e9minent est Pehar, amen\u00e9 \u00e0 Samye au VIIIe si\u00e8cle et attach\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;oracle d&rsquo;\u00c9tat.<\/p><div><h3>Pr\u00e9histoire B\u00f6n et la hi\u00e9rarchie des esprits<\/h3><p>La religion B\u00f6n, tradition religieuse pr\u00e9-bouddhiste du Tibet, r\u00e9partissait le monde surnaturel en une hi\u00e9rarchie complexe d&rsquo;\u00eatres non humains. Les <em>Tsen<\/em> appartenaient \u00e0 cette classification en tant qu&rsquo;esprits sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s des montagnes et de la guerre. Selon les sources B\u00f6n, les Tsen sont apparus lors d&rsquo;une phase cosmique ant\u00e9rieure, avant que les divinit\u00e9s ou les natures-bouddha n&rsquo;ordonnent le monde.<\/p><p>Ils sont donc plus anciens que le bouddhisme et plus profond\u00e9ment enracin\u00e9s dans le sol tib\u00e9tain. Le clerg\u00e9 B\u00f6n (<em>drangpo<\/em>) se sp\u00e9cialisait dans l&rsquo;apaisement des Tsen par des <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Don offert \u00e0 une divinit\u00e9 pour exprimer gratitude, requ\u00eate ou v\u00e9n\u00e9ration.\" tabindex=\"0\">offrandes<\/span> et des contrats. Ils constituent l&rsquo;une des trois classes d&rsquo;\u00eatres originelles (lha, klu, btsan). Lors de la conversion bouddhiste aux VIIe et VIIIe si\u00e8cles, de nombreux Tsen sont int\u00e9gr\u00e9s dans le nouveau syst\u00e8me religieux ; certains sont \u00e9tablis comme esprits protecteurs, d&rsquo;autres demeurent pr\u00e9sents en tant que redoutables seigneurs des montagnes.<\/p><p>L&rsquo;\u00e9pop\u00e9e de Gesar, l&rsquo;une des plus grandes \u00e9pop\u00e9es orales du monde, conna\u00eet de nombreuses figures de Tsen en tant qu&rsquo;adversaires et alli\u00e9s. Chaque col important des hautes terres poss\u00e8de son Tsen, souvent avec son propre nom et ses rituels sp\u00e9cifiques.<\/p><p>Lieux typiques : sommets de cols orn\u00e9s de drapeaux de pri\u00e8re (<em>lung ta<\/em>), blocs rocheux isol\u00e9s, parois rocheuses rouges ou frappantes, sources au pied de telles formations. Le <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Un \u00e9l\u00e9ment th\u00e9matique r\u00e9current dans l'art ou le r\u00e9cit.\" tabindex=\"0\">motif<\/span> du contrat avec les esprits des montagnes existe dans de nombreuses cultures pr\u00e9-bouddhistes, mais le Tibet l&rsquo;a conserv\u00e9 sous une forme unique d&rsquo;int\u00e9gration dans un grand syst\u00e8me religieux.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cp43d8871 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cp43d8871\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cp71c4f68 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cp71c4f68\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Place dans le syst\u00e8me tib\u00e9tain des esprits locaux<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cpa9845f9 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"cpa9845f9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cpc8de689 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cpc8de689\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Les <em>btsan<\/em> (prononc\u00e9s tsen) appartiennent aux classes d&rsquo;esprits autochtones du Tibet qui structurent la vision du monde tib\u00e9taine avant et parall\u00e8lement au bouddhisme.<\/p><p><span data-nosnippet>La litt\u00e9rature en sciences des religions, notamment l&rsquo;ouvrage fondamental <em>Oracles and Demons of Tibet<\/em> de Ren\u00e9 de Nebesky-Wojkowitz (1956), les int\u00e8gre dans un syst\u00e8me dense qui comprend entre autres les <a href=\"\/fr\/lu\/\">klu<\/a> des eaux et des enfers, les <a href=\"\/fr\/nyen\/\">gnyan<\/a> de la sph\u00e8re interm\u00e9diaire et les <em>lha<\/em> du ciel.<\/span><\/p><p>Au sein de ce sch\u00e9ma, les <em>btsan<\/em> sont les esprits de la r\u00e9gion interm\u00e9diaire \u00e0 sup\u00e9rieure, souvent li\u00e9s aux rochers, aux cols, aux flancs montagneux rouges et \u00e0 des arbres isol\u00e9s remarquables.<\/p><p>Leur couleur rouge est caract\u00e9ristique. Les <em>btsan<\/em> sont imagin\u00e9s comme des cavaliers rouges sur des chevaux rouges, en armure et arm\u00e9s d&rsquo;un arc ou d&rsquo;une lance.<\/p><p>Cette <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"\u00c9tude des contenus iconographiques et de leur signification.\" tabindex=\"0\">iconographie<\/span> les associe au combat, \u00e0 la chasse et \u00e0 la mort soudaine. Les maladies survenant sans avertissement, notamment les maladies f\u00e9briles ou accompagn\u00e9es de paralysie, \u00e9taient traditionnellement interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es comme une attaque des <em>btsan<\/em>. Le terme <em>btsan<\/em> est en tib\u00e9tain \u00e9galement un adjectif signifiant puissant et violent, ce qui d\u00e9signe imm\u00e9diatement la nature de la classe.<\/p><p>La profondeur historique du mot est remarquable. <em>Btsan<\/em> fait partie du titre royal <em>btsan po<\/em>, avec lequel \u00e9taient d\u00e9sign\u00e9s les souverains de l&#8217;empire tib\u00e9tain (du VIIe au IXe si\u00e8cle).<\/p><p>La recherche y voit un indice d&rsquo;un lien originellement \u00e9troit entre royaut\u00e9, culte des montagnes et la repr\u00e9sentation d&rsquo;une classe d&rsquo;esprits puissante et guerri\u00e8re. Avec l&rsquo;\u00e9tablissement du bouddhisme, les <em>btsan<\/em>, comme les autres esprits pr\u00e9-bouddhistes, ne furent pas supprim\u00e9s, mais int\u00e9gr\u00e9s dans le syst\u00e8me bouddhiste et en partie li\u00e9s comme divinit\u00e9s protectrices.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cpae6c1a0 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cpae6c1a0\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cp69837bb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cp69837bb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Attachement au bouddhisme et r\u00f4le de protecteur<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cp9536992 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"cp9536992\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cpc34bf98 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cpc34bf98\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>La tradition tib\u00e9taine conna\u00eet le <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Un \u00e9l\u00e9ment th\u00e9matique r\u00e9current dans l'art ou le r\u00e9cit.\" tabindex=\"0\">motif<\/span> selon lequel des ma\u00eetres puissants comme Padmasambhava au VIIIe si\u00e8cle soumirent les esprits indig\u00e8nes et les li\u00e8rent par serment \u00e0 la protection de l&rsquo;enseignement bouddhiste. Pour les <em>btsan<\/em>, cela signifiait une double existence.<\/p><p>D&rsquo;un c\u00f4t\u00e9, ils demeuraient des esprits sauvages non li\u00e9s, tapis \u00e0 leurs rochers et \u00e0 leurs cols. De l&rsquo;autre, certains <em>btsan<\/em> particuli\u00e8rement puissants pouvaient \u00eatre \u00e9lev\u00e9s au rang de <em>srung ma<\/em>, de divinit\u00e9s protectrices de monast\u00e8res et de lign\u00e9es d&rsquo;enseignement.<\/p><p>L&rsquo;exemple le plus connu est le dieu protecteur <a href=\"\/fr\/pehar\/\">Pehar<\/a>, dont l&rsquo;entourage est en partie attribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la classe des <em>btsan<\/em>. Le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre protecteur monastique Tsiu Marpo, v\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 au monast\u00e8re central de Samye, est \u00e9galement consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un <em>btsan<\/em> : un cavalier rouge cuirass\u00e9, qui pouvait \u00eatre consult\u00e9 comme divinit\u00e9 oraculaire.<\/p><p>Cela montre que la classe n&rsquo;\u00e9tait nullement connot\u00e9e uniquement de mani\u00e8re n\u00e9gative. Un <em>btsan<\/em> li\u00e9 \u00e9tait un protecteur efficace pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment parce que sa sauvagerie originelle et sa puissance guerri\u00e8re \u00e9taient pr\u00e9serv\u00e9es et mises au service du monast\u00e8re.<\/p><p>Dans la vie rituelle quotidienne des monast\u00e8res, ce lien \u00e9tait r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement renouvel\u00e9. Des offrandes, notamment des substances rouges, et la r\u00e9citation des formules de liaison maintenaient la relation. La recherche souligne que cette relation \u00e9tait consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme pr\u00e9caire.<\/p><p>Un <em>btsan<\/em> protecteur n\u00e9glig\u00e9 ou offens\u00e9 pouvait se retourner contre la communaut\u00e9 qu&rsquo;il \u00e9tait cens\u00e9 garder. C&rsquo;est en cela que la mani\u00e8re tib\u00e9taine de g\u00e9rer les <em>btsan<\/em> se distingue fondamentalement d&rsquo;une simple r\u00e9pulsion des d\u00e9mons.
