Le \u00ab cycle de Kumarbi \u00bb, qui tire son nom de lui, d\u00e9crit la succession des g\u00e9n\u00e9rations divines et contient les r\u00e9cits des g\u00e9ants de pierre autour de <a enna<\/em>) dans le <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"L'ensemble des dieux d'une religion ou d'une culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">panth\u00e9on<\/span> hourrite. Volkert Haas a montr\u00e9 dans <em>Geschichte der hethitischen Religion<\/em> (1994) que la <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"La discipline scientifique qui \u00e9tudie Dieu et la foi d'une religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">th\u00e9ologie<\/span> hourrite s&rsquo;infiltra profond\u00e9ment dans la religion hittite aux XVe et XIVe si\u00e8cles avant notre \u00e8re, et que Kumarbi, en tant que p\u00e8re de <a href=\"\/fr\/teshub\/\">Teshub<\/a>, y occupa une position centrale.<\/p><p>Au sein de la <a href=\"\/fr\/religion-hittite\/\">tradition hittite<\/a>, il est le repr\u00e9sentant le plus \u00e9minent de la composante religieuse hourrite.<\/p><p>Son profil en histoire des religions est ambivalent : d&rsquo;un c\u00f4t\u00e9, il est cr\u00e9ateur et garant d&rsquo;un ordre divin ant\u00e9rieur ; de l&rsquo;autre, apr\u00e8s son renversement par Teshub, il devient le grand adversaire du dieu de la temp\u00eate et fomente des r\u00e9voltes par le biais de g\u00e9ants de pierre et de monstres marins.<\/p><p>Daniel Schwemer l&rsquo;a caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 avec justesse dans <em>Die Wettergottgestalten<\/em> (2001) comme un \u00ab dieu-p\u00e8re d\u00e9chu \u00bb. Cette ambivalence fait de lui l&rsquo;une des figures th\u00e9ologiquement les plus int\u00e9ressantes de la <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"L'ensemble des r\u00e9cits mythiques transmis par une culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythologie<\/span> du Proche-Orient ancien.<\/p><p>Le cycle de Kumarbi est la composition mythologique la plus importante de la tradition hittite-hourrite et constitue l&rsquo;une des sources narratives majeures de la th\u00e9ogonie proche-orientale. Volkert Haas a propos\u00e9 comme \u00e9tymologie \u00ab celui de Kumar \u00bb, Kumar \u00e9tant vraisemblablement le lieu de culte originel. Une interpr\u00e9tation alternative voit dans l&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e9ment <em>-bi<\/em> un suffixe adjectival hourrite ; Kumarbi signifierait alors \u00ab le Kumarien \u00bb. Ces deux interpr\u00e9tations renvoient \u00e0 une origine de dieu-ville qui fut ensuite g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e sur le plan th\u00e9ologique.<\/p><p>Dans les textes cun\u00e9iformes, son nom appara\u00eet sous la forme <em>Ku-mar-bi<\/em>, parfois logographiquement DKUM ou DNISABA (dieu des c\u00e9r\u00e9ales sum\u00e9rien), ce qui indique une similarit\u00e9 fonctionnelle avec les divinit\u00e9s de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation et des c\u00e9r\u00e9ales. Cette identification avec le dieu des c\u00e9r\u00e9ales m\u00e9sopotamien est instructive en histoire des religions, car Kumarbi portait effectivement des fonctions li\u00e9es aux c\u00e9r\u00e9ales et \u00e0 la fertilit\u00e9. Dans certains textes, il est d\u00e9sign\u00e9 comme \u00ab p\u00e8re des c\u00e9r\u00e9ales \u00bb.<\/p><p>Dans l&rsquo;ougaritique, il correspond \u00e0 El, le vieux p\u00e8re des dieux ; l\u00e0 aussi, la constellation \u00ab vieux dieu-p\u00e8re, jeune dieu de la temp\u00eate \u00bb constitue un <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Un \u00e9l\u00e9ment th\u00e9matique r\u00e9current dans l'art ou le r\u00e9cit.\" tabindex=\"0\">motif<\/span> th\u00e9ologique central. Dans le <a href=\"\/fr\/pheniciens-carthage\/\">ph\u00e9nicien<\/a>, El joue \u00e9galement ce r\u00f4le, bien qu&rsquo;il soit souvent \u00e9clips\u00e9 par <a href=\"\/fr\/baal-hadad\/\">Baal-Hadad<\/a>. Il porte une longue robe pliss\u00e9e, une tiare divine pointue et tient un sceptre en main.<\/p><p>Sur certains sceaux de Nuzi et d&rsquo;Alala\u1e2b, il appara\u00eet avec des attributs de c\u00e9r\u00e9ales ou de plantes, ce qui souligne son caract\u00e8re de dieu-p\u00e8re de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation.<\/p><p>Son animal sacr\u00e9 n&rsquo;est pas attest\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re univoque ; dans certains textes, il appara\u00eet avec un taureau qui le porte sur son dos, dans d&rsquo;autres avec un cerf.<\/p><p>Volkert Haas a interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 cela comme un indice de fusion avec des divinit\u00e9s anatoliennes locales de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation et de la protection. L&rsquo;\u00e9dition de Hans G\u00fcterbock (1946) ainsi que les traductions de Beckman et Hoffner (<em>Hittite Myths<\/em>, 1998) constituent les r\u00e9f\u00e9rences standard.<\/p><p>Le texte d&rsquo;ouverture d\u00e9crit la succession des dieux : au commencement, Alalu r\u00e9gnait au ciel, renvers\u00e9 apr\u00e8s neuf ans par <a href=\"\/fr\/anu-hethitisch\/\">Anu (hittite)<\/a> ; Anu fut \u00e0 son tour renvers\u00e9 apr\u00e8s neuf nouvelles ann\u00e9es par Kumarbi, qui l&rsquo;\u00e9mascula avec les dents et se trouva ainsi f\u00e9cond\u00e9 par la \u00ab semence virile \u00bb d&rsquo;Anu.<\/p><p>De l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur de Kumarbi grandirent alors trois dieux, parmi lesquels <a href=\"\/fr\/teshub\/\">Teshub<\/a>, destin\u00e9 \u00e0 briser la souverainet\u00e9 de Kumarbi.<\/p><p>Suivirent ensuite les tentatives de Kumarbi de reprendre le pouvoir \u00e0 l&rsquo;aide de diverses cr\u00e9atures monstrueuses : il engendre avec la fille de la mer le g\u00e9ant de pierre <a href=\"\/fr\/ullikummi\/\">Ullikummi<\/a>, qui grandit jusqu&rsquo;au ciel sur l&rsquo;\u00e9paule du g\u00e9ant Upelluri ; il engendre le monstre marin <a href=\"\/fr\/hedammu\/\">Hedammu<\/a> ; il lib\u00e8re la cr\u00e9ature d&rsquo;argent et d&rsquo;autres \u00eatres.<\/p><p>Dans tous les cas, Teshub finit par triompher avec l&rsquo;aide de sa s\u0153ur \u0160au\u0161ga-I\u0161tar et du dieu forgeron \u1e2aa\u0161ammilu (Ea).<\/p><p>Dans le \u00ab Chant de l&rsquo;Argent \u00bb (CTH 364), Kumarbi cr\u00e9e une nouvelle cr\u00e9ature, l&rsquo;\u00eatre d&rsquo;argent, mi-humain mi-min\u00e9ral, destin\u00e9 \u00e0 provoquer une r\u00e9bellion cosmique. Le texte est fragmentaire, mais l&rsquo;intrigue suit le m\u00eame sch\u00e9ma : Kumarbi engendre avec une m\u00e8re mortelle ou semi-divine un \u00eatre cens\u00e9 renverser Teshub, et cet \u00eatre est finalement vaincu.<\/p><p>Cette multiplicit\u00e9 de tentatives constitue la trag\u00e9die de Kumarbi : il est le grand p\u00e8re qui r\u00e9siste au cours de l&rsquo;histoire et \u00e9choue \u00e0 plusieurs reprises face \u00e0 son fils plus puissant. Les fouilles arch\u00e9ologiques men\u00e9es par Giorgio Buccellati et Marilyn Kelly-Buccellati y ont identifi\u00e9 un <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Un \u00e9difice consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 la v\u00e9n\u00e9ration d'une ou de plusieurs divinit\u00e9s.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> vraisemblablement <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Remis au sacr\u00e9 par un acte religieux et ainsi soustrait au quotidien.\" tabindex=\"0\">d\u00e9di\u00e9<\/span> \u00e0 Kumarbi. \u00c0 \u1e2aattu\u0161a, il poss\u00e9dait son propre <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Un \u00e9difice consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 la v\u00e9n\u00e9ration d'une ou de plusieurs divinit\u00e9s.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> au sein du panth\u00e9on imp\u00e9rial.<\/p><p>Dans le calendrier rituel imp\u00e9rial hittite, Kumarbi figurait parmi les divinit\u00e9s auxquelles des <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Offrande faite \u00e0 une divinit\u00e9 pour exprimer la gratitude, la requ\u00eate ou la v\u00e9n\u00e9ration.\" tabindex=\"0\">offrandes<\/span> \u00e9taient pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es lors des grandes f\u00eates imp\u00e9riales, bien qu&rsquo;il occup\u00e2t g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement un rang secondaire derri\u00e8re Teshub et <a href=\"\/fr\/hebat\/\">Hebat<\/a>.<\/p><p>Il occupait une place particuli\u00e8re dans le calendrier festif hourrite, notamment lors de la \u00ab Grande Assembl\u00e9e \u00bb (<em>itkalzi<\/em>) et dans le rituel de serment <em>itkahi<\/em>. Dans le calendrier imp\u00e9rial, la f\u00eate <em>(EZEN) \u1e2bi\u0161uwa<\/em> lui \u00e9tait consacr\u00e9e, une c\u00e9l\u00e9bration de plusieurs jours d\u00e9crite en d\u00e9tail dans les inventaires des temples.<\/p><p>L&rsquo;organisation sacerdotale de son culte \u00e9tait bipartite : les pr\u00eatres hourrites (<em>kaluti<\/em>) accomplissaient les rituels hourrites, les pr\u00eatres hittites les rituels hittites.<\/p><p>Ce bilinguisme rituel est bien document\u00e9, notamment par Joost Hazenbos dans <em>The Organization of the Anatolian Local Cults<\/em> (2003). La c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de serment <em>itkahi<\/em> associait son nom \u00e0 ceux de <a href=\"\/fr\/teshub\/\">Teshub<\/a> et de <a href=\"\/fr\/hebat\/\">Hebat<\/a> au sein d&rsquo;une sorte de triade divine. Dans la formule de serment hourrite, il \u00e9tait invoqu\u00e9 comme \u00ab p\u00e8re des dieux \u00bb.<\/p><p><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Qui \u00e9carte le malheur : se dit de signes et d'objets cens\u00e9s \u00e9loigner les influences n\u00e9fastes.\" tabindex=\"0\">Apotropa\u00efquement<\/span>, des figurines en argile repr\u00e9sentant Kumarbi et sa prog\u00e9niture \u00e9taient utilis\u00e9es dans les rituels magiques hourrites ; elles \u00e9taient symboliquement ligot\u00e9es ou enterr\u00e9es afin d&rsquo;entraver r\u00e9voltes, maladies ou puissances ennemies.<\/p><p>Cette pratique s&rsquo;inscrit dans la tradition des figurines apotropa\u00efques m\u00e9sopotamiennes et fait partie de la ritualisation protectrice globale de la religion hourrite-hittite. Volkert Haas a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 les \u00e9ditions de textes correspondants dans <em>Materia Magica et Medica Hethitica<\/em> (2003).<\/p><p>D&rsquo;un point de vue scientifique, Kumarbi illustre l&rsquo;ambivalence th\u00e9ologique des dieux cr\u00e9ateurs qui sont \u00e0 la fois d\u00e9chus et potentiellement dangereux. Aucune pratique de protection moderne ne s&rsquo;appuie sur sa figure. L&rsquo;iWell-Guard le consid\u00e8re comme une figure historique sans lien avec des promesses de gu\u00e9rison actuelles.<\/p><p>Dans les calendriers festifs hittites, Kumarbi appara\u00eet occasionnellement comme destinataire d&rsquo;<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Offrande faite \u00e0 une divinit\u00e9 pour exprimer la gratitude, la requ\u00eate ou la v\u00e9n\u00e9ration.\" tabindex=\"0\">offrandes<\/span> sp\u00e9cifiques provenant du tr\u00e9sor royal : lingots d&rsquo;argent, v\u00eatements de laine, vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de pain et bi\u00e8re. Apr\u00e8s neuf ans, Kumarbi se soul\u00e8ve contre Anu, le pourchasse, le saisit aux pieds et lui arrache les parties g\u00e9nitales d&rsquo;un coup de dents lors de sa chute du ciel.<\/p><p>Par cet acte, Kumarbi se retrouve enceint. D&rsquo;autres textes, souvent conserv\u00e9s de fa\u00e7on fragmentaire, s&rsquo;y ajoutent.<\/p><p>Dans ce qu&rsquo;on appelle le Chant de l&rsquo;Argent, le h\u00e9ros est un \u00eatre nomm\u00e9 U\u0161\u1e2bune, dont le nom signifie \u00ab argent \u00bb et qui est lui aussi un fils de Kumarbi. Il grandit, apprend son origine et menace l&rsquo;ordre du ciel, jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce que le Soleil et la Lune lui fassent face.<\/p><p>Un autre texte, le Chant d&rsquo;Hedammu, raconte l&rsquo;histoire d&rsquo;un monstre marin en forme de serpent, fils de Kumarbi et d&rsquo;une divinit\u00e9 marine, qui menace de d\u00e9vorer l&rsquo;humanit\u00e9. C&rsquo;est ici la d\u00e9esse <a href=\"\/fr\/anat-phoenix\/\">\u0160au\u0161ga<\/a>, l&rsquo;\u00e9quivalent hourrite d&rsquo;Ishtar, qui apaise Hedammu par son pouvoir de s\u00e9duction, le rendant ainsi inoffensif.<\/p><p>Dans tous ces chants, Kumarbi repr\u00e9sente l&rsquo;ancienne g\u00e9n\u00e9ration d\u00e9chue qui veut reconqu\u00e9rir sa souverainet\u00e9, tandis que Teshub incarne l&rsquo;ordre \u00e9tabli. Ce qui est caract\u00e9ristique, c&rsquo;est que Teshub ne d\u00e9tourne jamais seul le danger.
