data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Tanit is a goddess with scarcely any attestation in the Phoenician homeland, yet she rose to become one of the most important deities in Carthage and the western Mediterranean Punic colonies.<\/p><p>Maria Eugenia Aubet demonstrated in <em>The Phoenicians and the West<\/em> (2001) that Tanit only became chief goddess in Carthage during the 5th century BCE. Within the <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/phoenicians-and-carthage-baal-tanit-and-the-tradition-of-protection\/\">Phoenician tradition<\/a> she therefore represents a specifically western development.<\/p><p>Sabatino Moscati described the Carthage-specific religion with Tanit as its apex deity in detail in <em>Il mondo dei Fenici<\/em> (1966) and in numerous later studies. She appears regularly before <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/baal-hammon-chief-god-of-carthage\/\">Baal-Hammon<\/a> on the Tophet stelae (infant burials with dedicatory inscriptions), which underscores her standing as the supreme protective goddess of the Punic family and state.<\/p><p>From a history-of-religions perspective, Tanit represents the type of the state goddess found in several Mediterranean cultures (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/hebat-hurrian-supreme-goddess\/\">Hebat<\/a> among the Hittites, <a href=\"\/en\/astarte-phoenician-goddess\/\">Astarte<\/a> in Phoenicia, Roma in Rome). Her relationship to <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/baal-hammon-chief-god-of-carthage\/\">Baal-Hammon<\/a> as husband or companion is the most important <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic study of God and the doctrines of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theological<\/span> bond. Together the two form the supreme divine pair of Carthage.<\/p><p>An interesting question in scholarship concerns the possible prehistory of Tanit in the Phoenician homeland. Isolated attestations from Sarepta and Sidon suggest that a predecessor goddess existed who developed into an independent chief goddess in Carthage. This &#8220;Tanitic&#8221; transformation is one of the most remarkable history-of-religions phenomena of the western Mediterranean.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-tanit-s1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-tanit-s1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-tanit-s1h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-tanit-s1h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Name and Etymology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-tanit-s1c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-tanit-s1c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-tanit-s1t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-tanit-s1t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The etymology of the name Tanit has not been definitively resolved. One plausible interpretation connects it to the West Semitic root <em>tnn<\/em> &#8220;to lament, to wail,&#8221; which would suit a mourning-goddess function.<\/p><p>Another interpretation views the name as a Berber loanword, which would fit the Libyan-Numidian component of Carthage. A third possibility is a connection with Ugaritic attestations of a goddess Tannit.<\/p><p>In inscriptions she appears as <em>tnt pn b&#x02BF;l<\/em> &#8220;Tanit, Face of Baal.&#8221; This <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A fixed epithet that characterizes a deity or figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">epithet<\/span> emphasizes her theological function as an appearance or manifestation of Baal-Hammon. In Greek sources she is identified with Hera or with Artemis Caelestis; in the Roman period with Juno Caelestis, who later became an important African-Roman chief goddess.<\/p><p>The Greek and Roman reception as &#8220;Lady of Heaven&#8221; connects her with an astral aspect; the lunar <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands in place of an idea or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbol<\/span> is regularly associated with her. The famous &#8220;moon and star&#8221; stelae from the Tophet of Carthage clearly show this astral connotation. Charles Krahmalkov assembled the most important epigraphic attestations in <em>A Phoenician-Punic Grammar<\/em> (2001).<\/p><p>An important theological consequence of the epithet &#8220;Face of Baal&#8221; is the view of Tanit as a hypostatic appearance of Baal-Hammon. Sometimes the Tanit sign stands alone, sometimes in combination with the &#8220;caduceus&#8221; or with ship-prow symbols. This iconographic richness reflects the multifunctional character of the goddess.<\/p><p>Anthropomorphic representations are rarer; an important exception is a statuette from Thinissut (Tunisia) showing Tanit as an enthroned goddess with a polos crown and sphinx attendants.<\/p><p>In the Hellenistic-Roman phases she also appears increasingly in human form, especially after her identification with Juno Caelestis.
