data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Baal-Hammon is one of the most important deities of the western Mediterranean Punic world.<\/p><p>Sabatino Moscati demonstrated in <em>Il mondo dei Fenici<\/em> (1966) that Baal-Hammon was attested in the Phoenician homeland but held a secondary rank there; in Carthage he reached the apex of the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the gods of a religion or culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">pantheon<\/span>, sharing that position with <a href=\"\/en\/tanit-chief-goddess-of-carthage\/\">Tanit<\/a>. Within the <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/phoenicians-and-carthage-baal-tanit-and-the-tradition-of-protection\/\">Phoenician tradition<\/a> he is the prototypical Punic supreme deity.<\/p><p>Maria Eugenia Aubet documented his Mediterranean distribution in <em>The Phoenicians and the West<\/em> (2001); Baal-Hammon <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sacred place dedicated to the veneration of a deity.\" tabindex=\"0\">sanctuaries<\/span> are attested in Carthage, Motya, Tharros, Sulcis, Hadrumetum, and many other sites. In the Roman imperial period his veneration continued as Saturnus Africanus, achieving a remarkable persistence in the Numidian-Mauretanian province through to the 4th century CE.<\/p><p>In the history of religions, Baal-Hammon represents the type of the supreme deity with <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the earth or the underworld; in ancient religion the gods and spirits of the depths (Hades, the Erinyes, Demeter chthonia).\" tabindex=\"0\">chthonic<\/span> and solar aspects. Marcel Le Glay showed in <em>Saturne africain<\/em> (1966) that the identification with the Roman Saturnus was based on Baal-Hammon&#8217;s dual nature: he is both a grain and harvest god (Saturnian aspect) and a chthonic father god.<\/p><p>The Tophet stelae and the numerous inscriptions <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The transmission of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">record<\/span> his <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of religious acts of veneration directed toward a deity or sacred figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult<\/span> as a central finding in the history of religions.<\/p><p>The persistence of Baal-Hammon in the Roman imperial period as Saturnus Africanus is one of the most remarkable examples of religious-historical continuity following the political collapse of the Punic state. More than two thousand Saturn stelae have been preserved from the North African provinces, from the 1st through the 4th century CE.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-baalhammon-s1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-baalhammon-s1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-baalhammon-s1h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-baalhammon-s1h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Name and Etymology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-baalhammon-s1c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-baalhammon-s1c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-baalhammon-s1t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-baalhammon-s1t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The name <em>b\u02bfl \u1e25mn<\/em> is composed of <em>b\u02bfl<\/em> &#8216;lord&#8217; and <em>\u1e25mn<\/em>, whose etymology is disputed. One interpretation connects <em>\u1e25mn<\/em> with the root <em>\u1e25mm<\/em> &#8216;to be hot&#8217; and understands Baal-Hammon as &#8216;Lord of Heat&#8217;, presumably with a solar aspect.<\/p><p>Another interpretation reads <em>\u1e25mn<\/em> as a place name &#8216;Hammon&#8217; (possibly a location in Phoenicia), making Baal-Hammon &#8216;Lord of Hammon&#8217;. A third possibility connects <em>\u1e25mn<\/em> with incense-cult objects (&#8216;incense <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An elevated place or table for offerings and religious acts.\" tabindex=\"0\">altar<\/span>&#8216;).<\/p><p>Charles Krahmalkov compiled the epigraphic variants in <em>A Phoenician-Punic Grammar<\/em> (2001); in inscriptions he appears as <em>b\u02bfl \u1e25mn<\/em> or simply <em>b\u02bfl<\/em>. The Greek rendering is \u0392\u03ac\u03b1\u03bb-\u1f08\u03bc\u03bc\u03c9\u03bd (Baal-Ammon); in the Hellenistic period he was occasionally also identified with the Egyptian Amun (in traces).<\/p><p>The Roman identification with Saturnus is the most enduring and shapes African-Roman religious history.<\/p><p>In the Hebrew material, Hammon appears as a place name in Galilee; whether a direct religious-historical connection exists remains unclear. In Aramaic inscriptions from Palmyra, an <em>\u02bfolam<\/em>-deity with functions similar to Baal-Hammon appears; here too the precise relationship is disputed. In religious-historical terms, Baal-Hammon is a specifically western development.<\/p><p>A further etymological hypothesis connects <em>\u1e25mn<\/em> with Aramaic <em>\u1e25mn<\/em> &#8216;to have mercy&#8217;, which would carry a theologically profound connotation; however, it is not linguistically secure from a historical-linguistic standpoint.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-baalhammon-s2 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-baalhammon-s2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-baalhammon-s2h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-baalhammon-s2h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Description and Iconography<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-baalhammon-s2c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-baalhammon-s2c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-baalhammon-s2t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-baalhammon-s2t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Baal-Hammon appears in Punic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The study of pictorial content and its meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">iconography<\/span> most commonly as an enthroned bearded old man wearing a bull-horn crown, a long pleated garment, and holding a scepter.<\/p><p>This pictorial <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span> is widely attested on the Tophet stelae and distinguishes him from <a href=\"\/en\/baal-hadad-phoenician-weather-god\/\">Baal-Hadad<\/a>, who appears as a youthful storm god with a raised axe. Baal-Hammon&#8217;s aged profile connects him theologically with the Ugaritic El and with Saturnus.<\/p><p>His <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the divine and thereby withdrawn from everyday use.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacred<\/span> animal is the ram or goat; in Punic sacrificial rituals the ram was the preferred sacrificial animal. On some stelae he appears flanked by sphinxes or griffins.<\/p><p>In Carthage, a colossal bronze statue of Baal-Hammon stood in the city <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span>; it is mentioned in sources concerning the Tophet <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An offering to a deity to express gratitude, petition, or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">offerings<\/span> and is said to have had mechanisms that caused sacrificial animals or children to fall into a fire below. Source criticism on this point is disputed and is today assessed with considerable caution.<\/p><p>In the Hellenistic-Roman period, Baal-Hammon iconography increasingly merged with the Saturnus tradition; the late Roman Saturn stelae from North Africa (3rd and 4th century CE) show the god as a bearded old man with a sickle, following the Saturnus model exactly.<\/p><p>This Saturnus-Africanus iconography is Marcel Le Glay&#8217;s main subject and is treated in detail in his monograph.<\/p><p>An impressive archaeological source is the numerous bronze statuettes from the Tophet, which show Baal-Hammon enthroned with one hand raised in a gesture of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An invocation of well-being and protection, often in fixed verbal form.\" tabindex=\"0\">blessing<\/span>. Inside stood the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An image of a deity venerated in a temple or shrine.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult image<\/span> or a &#8216;mazzeba&#8217; (sacred pillar), the latter typical of the Phoenician aniconic tradition regarding the highest <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span>.<\/p><p>In the Roman imperial period, Baal-Hammon continued to be venerated as Saturnus Africanus; his <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A building that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> in Carthage was renamed and re<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Consecrated to the sacred through a religious act and thereby set apart from the everyday.\" tabindex=\"0\">consecrated<\/span>.<\/p><p>The number of Saturn stelae in North Africa exceeds that of all other Roman deities in the region; Baal-Hammon-Saturnus was the most important <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> of the African provinces through to the 4th century CE. The standard formula names first <em>Baal Hammon<\/em> and the goddess <em>Tinnit<\/em> (often referred to as &#8220;Tinnit, Face of Baal&#8221;), then the name of the dedicant and his or her concern.<\/p><p>These inscriptions are the densest epigraphic source for Punic religion as a whole and make Baal Hammon the best-attested Carthaginian <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span>.<\/p><p>The interpretation of the Tophet has been contested since the 19th century. <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The era of Greek and Roman culture, approximately 800 BCE to 600 CE.\" tabindex=\"0\">Ancient<\/span> Greek and Roman authors such as Diodorus and Plutarch report Carthaginian child <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An offering to a deity to express gratitude, petition, or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacrifices<\/span>, and part of the scholarly community sees in the Tophet the archaeological confirmation.<\/p><p>A counter-position, represented among others by Sabatino Moscati and later by others, interprets the precinct as a cemetery for infants who had already died of natural causes.<\/p><p>More recent osteological examinations of the cremated bones have not resolved the debate conclusively. In Roman North Africa he lived on under the name <em>Saturnus Africanus<\/em>, one of the most widely attested cults in the province of Africa.<\/p><p>Hundreds of Saturn stelae from the Roman period show that the Punic population continued to venerate their old principal deity under a Roman name, with distinctive iconographic features such as the god shown beneath a veil or holding a sickle.<\/p><p>The Greeks had already equated Baal Hammon with <em>Kronos<\/em>, a connection that plays a role especially in the accounts of child sacrifice, since Kronos devoured his own children.<\/p><p>The Romans then chose Saturn, the Latin counterpart to Kronos. This <em>interpretatio<\/em> is a double-edged tool for scholarship: on the one hand it reveals continuity, on the other it overlays the Punic figure with Greek-Roman conceptions.<\/p><p>The question of who Baal Hammon originally was cannot therefore be answered by the late Saturn equation alone. Discussion continues over whether the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A fixed epithet that characterizes a deity or figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">epithet<\/span> <em>Hammon<\/em> refers to a place name, perhaps the north Syrian Hamath or a mountain, or to the Semitic word for &#8220;brazier&#8221; or &#8220;incense altar&#8221;.<\/p><p>Eric Gubel, Paolo Xella, and others have worked on these questions without a consensus having been reached.
