She is a specialized female high <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> below the supreme deity <em>Uryn Aar Toyon<\/em>; her specialization, like that of <a href=\"\/en\/umai-mother-and-child-goddess-of-the-turkic-peoples\/\">Umai<\/a> in the Turkic world, is birth and infancy.<\/p><p>Within the <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/siberian-shamanism-and-tengrism-steppe-and-taiga\/\">Siberian-Tengristic tradition<\/a>, she represents the Yakut variant of the pan-Siberian mother-protection function. She has become a key figure in scholarship because the Yakut sources (Sieroszewski, Ksenofontov) are particularly rich and provide a good comparative case alongside Umai and other mother-birth deities.<\/p><p>The Sakha Republic belongs today to the Russian Federation and is located in northeastern Siberia; its <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religion<\/span> combines Old Turkic strata (the Sakha speak a Turkic idiom) with Paleo-Siberian substrates. Literally rendered, it means something like &#8220;the Creator-Woman.&#8221; In older literature she also appears as <em>Ajysyt<\/em>, <em>Ajyhyt<\/em>, or <em>Ayisit<\/em>.<\/p><p>Yakut religion distinguishes three layers of beings: the upper <em>aiyy<\/em>, the middle <em>iccii<\/em> (&#8220;guardians, <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span>&#8220;), and the lower <em>abasy<\/em> (&#8220;harmful beings&#8221;). Ajisit as &#8220;aiyy-creatrix&#8221; clearly belongs to the upper layer.<\/p><p>Instructive is the parallel formation with other aiyy specializations: <em>Ynakhsyt<\/em> (&#8220;cattle-creatrix&#8221;), <em>Yhych-Khan<\/em> (&#8220;horse-bestower&#8221;). She then remains present for three days; during this time nothing loud or sharp may occur inside the house.<\/p><p>Sieroszewski, in his extensive 1896 monograph <em>Yakuty<\/em>, collected a large number of such conceptions. He was a political exile in the Sakha region and used his circumstances to produce a pioneering ethnographic work that remains one of the most important sources to this day.<\/p><p>In modern Sakha <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The traditional folk culture with its customs, narratives, and songs.\" tabindex=\"0\">folklore<\/span>, Ajisit appears on postage stamps, in school textbooks, and on Ysyakh festival posters. Sieroszewski (1896) documented a variant in which Ajisit rides back to the upper heavens after each birth to make her report.<\/span><\/p><p>In particularly difficult births, Ajisit may call upon her sister <em>Iyehsit<\/em> (a protective goddess of women in confinement) for help. The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the transmitted divine narratives of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span> distinguishes three Ajisit sisters: one for humans, one for horses, one for cattle; in practice they frequently merge into a single figure.<\/p><p>One particular Olonkho narrative recounts how Ajisit extends the &#8220;golden thread of life&#8221; for a heroine who is on the verge of dying in battle. On the third day after birth, the family celebrates the <em>Ajisit-Asar<\/em> <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A regulated sequence of symbolic actions with religious or cultural significance.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritual<\/span>: a meal with mare&#8217;s milk, kobylja curd, and butter pastries, accompanied by incense made from larch resin.<\/p><p>The midwife and mother are purified with birch boughs. The midwife speaks the words &#8220;Ajisit has come, Ajisit has gone&#8221; &#8211; formulaic phrases attested in the Olonkho corpus.<\/p><p>On a broader level, Ajisit formed part of the great spring festival <em>Ysyakh<\/em>, at which <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/yhych-khan-yakut-horse-lord\/\">Yhych-Khan<\/a> as horse-bestower was also honored. What is known about Ajisit comes predominantly from records produced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Russian and politically exiled ethnographers documented Yakut religion.<\/p><p>Vasily Sieroszewski, a Pole exiled to Yakutia, wrote an extensive monograph on the Sakha in which birth rites also appear.
