Researchers such as Ray Norris (CSIRO), Duane Hamacher and John Goldsmith have shown that the Aboriginal tradition maintains an extraordinarily detailed practice of observation and remembrance.

In this astronomy Baiame is not only a religious being but a cosmological orientation. He “looks” from his place in the sky upon the people and “moves” with the course of the year. This astronomical anchoring gives the Baiame tradition a dimension that was often overlooked in the older ethnographic literature.

Baiame and comparative research on high gods

The position of Baiame in international research on high gods deserves a comparative examination. Mircea Eliade described this class systematically in Patterns in Comparative Religion (1949).

Structurally comparable with Baiame, besides the Australian All-Fathers, are also: Tengri in Siberian Tengrism, Olorun among the Yoruba, Nyame among the Ashanti, the Vedic Dyaus Pitar, and the Chinese Tian. Transferring the Baiame tradition to Aboriginal cultures of northern or western Australia is factually incorrect; Baiame is a southeastern figure.

The most important early sources are the records of the ethnographer Alfred William Howitt, who at the end of the nineteenth century described initiation rites and conceptions in his work on the native tribes of southeastern Australia, as well as the books of Katie Langloh Parker, who lived in the Euahlayi region.

Both, however, worked at a time when the societies of the region had already been deeply shaken by land seizure, disease and mission.

A particular problem of the Baiame tradition is the question of how far the image, drawn in the sources, of a supreme heavenly creator being was shaped by Christian influence.

Andrew Lang already used Baiame in the religious-historical debate about the so-called high god, and later researchers such as Tony Swain have argued that the strong emphasis on a single heavenly creator might in part be a reaction to colonial contact.

A pre-colonial core and a post-colonial reshaping can hardly be reliably distinguished. In these multi-day, sometimes multi-week rites, young men were introduced into adult life and into religious knowledge.

Howitt described for several groups that Baiame was held to be the one who had instituted the rites and whose laws were passed on within them.

The setting of the ceremonies were the Bora grounds, often two circular earthen banks connected by a path, occasionally with carved trees, so-called dendroglyphs, and earth figures along the edge. Some such ground depictions, according to the records, showed figures associated with Baiame.

The precise function of the individual elements is only partly documented, since the rites contained secret knowledge that was not accessible to outsiders and especially to uninitiated persons. The early recorders therefore often received only partial information.

From a religious-studies point of view the linking of Baiame with the Bora is instructive, because it shows that the figure was present not primarily through narrated myths but through ritual practice and through the transmission of law and rules of conduct.

Baiame appears as the guarantor of a social and moral order that passes to the next generation in the initiation.
