discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religion<\/span> of the Murinbata, an Aboriginal language group at the mouth of the Daly River in northern Australia. In terms of religious history, his significance is especially great because W. E. H. Stanner, one of the most important anthropologists of the twentieth century, made Murinbata religion his principal field of research.<\/p><p>Stanner&#8217;s <em>On Aboriginal Religion<\/em> (1966) is one of the densest religious-studies investigations of Aboriginal religion of all; Tjinimin plays a central role in it.<\/p><p>Within the <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/aboriginal-australia-dreamtime-tjukurpa-and-protective-objects\/\">Aboriginal tradition<\/a>, Tjinimin is a composite figure: on the one hand creator and initiator (he brings the Murinbata men the secret <em>Punj<\/em> <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An ordered sequence of symbolic actions with religious or cultural meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritual<\/span>), on the other a trickster whose mythical transgressions establish the human world of limitations.<\/p><p>In terms of the phenomenology of religion, Tjinimin is a rewarding case study because he aptly illustrates the ambivalence of many Aboriginal creation figures: they are not pure bringers of salvation, but also flawed beings whose transgressions determine the human condition.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-tjinimin-s1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-tjinimin-s1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-tjinimin-s1h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-tjinimin-s1h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Name and Etymology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-tjinimin-s1c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-tjinimin-s1c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-tjinimin-s1t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-tjinimin-s1t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In the Murinbata idiom, the name <em>Tjinimin<\/em> denotes both the bat (in particular the large flying fox, <em>Pteropus alecto<\/em>) and the mythical ancestor figure.<\/p><p>In the anthropology of religion, this identity of animal and mythical figure is a classic feature of totemic religions as described by \u00c9mile Durkheim in <em>Les formes \u00e9l\u00e9mentaires de la vie religieuse<\/em> (1912) on the basis of Australian materials.<\/p><p>The spelling <em>Djinimin<\/em> is also found in the older ethnographic literature; in his later works Stanner moved to the spelling <em>Tjinimin<\/em>, which is standard today.<\/p><p>The Murinbata language is part of the Daly River language family; it is still maintained today by several hundred speakers at the Wadeye Mission (Port Keats). In some versions he has human limbs but bat wings; in others he is an ordinary man who transforms into a bat in order to fly.<\/p><p>The Murinbata <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span> has no extensive pictorial <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The study of pictorial content and its meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">iconography<\/span>; its religious practice is predominantly oral and ritual. In terms of the phenomenology of religion, this creation narrative is a classic example of the &#8220;culture hero&#8221; type, in which mythical figures bring central cultural techniques.<\/p><p>In <em>On Aboriginal Religion<\/em> (1966), W. E. H. Stanner analyzed these narratives in one of the densest religious-studies texts of Australian anthropology.
