For the Romans, Venus was the goddess of love and beauty, but at the same time the ancestral<\/span> mother of the Roman people and the ancestress of the gens Iulia. Her cult<\/span> linked personal and political significance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Venus is among the most important deities of Roman religion<\/span>. She was the goddess of love, of attraction and of beauty, but beyond that also a politically highly charged figure.<\/p>

For the Romans regarded Venus as the ancestral mother of their people, mediated through the Trojan Aeneas, who was held to be her son, and she was at the same time the particular ancestress of the gens Iulia<\/em>, the family to which Caesar and Augustus belonged.<\/p>

In terms of religious history, Venus is a many-layered figure. Her original core is discussed in scholarship. An old Italic deity<\/span> associated with gardens, growth and grace is assumed.<\/p>

Early on, Venus was equated with the Greek Aphrodite and took over her myths and visual world. Through the Aeneas legend<\/span>, she additionally acquired a central place in Roman self-understanding.<\/p>

Thus Venus unites several layers: a possibly ancient<\/span> connection with growth and grace, the Greek-influenced goddess of love, and the state-sustaining ancestress of Rome<\/a>.<\/p>

Especially in the late Republic and the early imperial period, her cult<\/span> was put to political use by leading figures. Venus is therefore an outstanding example of how religion, family history and politics were intertwined in Rome.<\/p>

The political charging of Venus proceeded in several steps over the last century before our era.<\/p>

Sulla already claimed for himself a special favor of the goddess, Pompey dedicated<\/span> a sanctuary<\/span> to her, and Caesar made the descent of his family from Venus the centerpiece of his self-presentation. In scholarship the name Venus<\/em> is connected with a Latin semantic field that includes terms such as venustas<\/em>, grace or charm, and venia<\/em>, favor or grace. Underlying it is presumably a root denoting desire, longing or pleasure. The name thus characterizes the goddess as the power of attraction and of pleasing.<\/p>

It is striking that in older Latin the word venus<\/em> could at first also be used as an ordinary noun in the sense of grace or charm. From this the proper name of the goddess developed.<\/p>

This development from a general term to a personal deity<\/span> is a recurring pattern in Roman religion and applies to other figures as well, who originally named abstract qualities.<\/p>

In terms of religious history, this etymology is important because it points to a possible native origin of Venus, independent of the Greek Aphrodite.<\/p>

Before Venus became the Roman Aphrodite, she may have been a rather inconspicuous deity<\/span> of grace and favor. In the pictorial tradition<\/span>, Venus appears as a beautiful, youthful woman, often wholly or partly unclothed, in a graceful pose. This mode of depiction largely follows the model of the Greek Aphrodite, whose visual types were widely taken up in Roman art.<\/p>

Her attributes include the dove, the shell, flowers, especially the rose, and the small winged god of love who often accompanies her.<\/p>

The shell refers to the myth<\/span> of the goddess’s birth from the sea, the dove and the rose to the sphere of love and grace. In Roman art, however, there are also special forms that emphasize her state-related and warlike aspects.<\/p>

Thus Venus was depicted as Venus Victrix<\/em>, the victory-bringing Venus, occasionally with weapons or with signs of victory, and as Venus Genetrix<\/em>, the begetting ancestral mother, in a more dignified, more fully clothed form.<\/p>

Venus appears on statues, wall paintings, reliefs, gems and very often on coins. Especially in the time of Caesar and the early emperors, her image was used on coins to emphasize the descent of the ruling house from the goddess.<\/p>

The iconography<\/span> of Venus is therefore not only an iconography of beauty, but also a means of political self-presentation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The circle of myths around Venus is closely linked with that of the Greek Aphrodite. Narratives of the goddess’s birth from the sea foam, of her connection with various gods and mortals, and of her role in the Trojan legendary cycle were taken over from the Greek sphere and inserted into Roman literature.<\/p>

Most important for Roman self-understanding is the Aeneas legend<\/span>. According to it, Aeneas is the son of Venus and the Trojan Anchises. Aeneas flees from burning Troy, reaches Italy after long wanderings, and becomes the forefather of the Romans.<\/p>

This narrative is elaborated above all in Vergil’s Aeneid<\/em>, in which Venus appears as the caring mother of the hero, protects him and advances his destiny. Through Aeneas and his son Iulus, the gens Iulia<\/em> derived its descent from the goddess.<\/p>

Ovid too takes up numerous Venus myths in his Metamorphoses<\/em> and other works, among them the story of Venus and Adonis and that of Pygmalion. Alongside this stands the political myth<\/span> of the late Republic. The general Sulla, then Pompey and finally Caesar each referred to Venus in their own way.<\/p>

Caesar expressly traced the descent of his family back to the goddess and vowed her a temple<\/span> during the civil war. The mythical tradition<\/span> of Venus is thus doubly shaped, by the Greek Aphrodite material and by the specifically Roman link with the foundation legend and the ruling family.<\/p>

The poet Lucretius places his didactic poem on the nature of things under the invocation<\/span> of Venus, whom he addresses as a begetting, life-producing power.<\/p>

This philosophically tinged interpretation shows that Venus could be understood, beyond the goddess of love, as a comprehensive principle of becoming. The cult<\/span> of Venus in Rome had several forms, marked by different epithets. There were older sanctuaries<\/span> that venerated Venus in connection with gardens and with female spheres of life. Alongside these stood temples<\/span> that emphasized her particular functions, for instance Venus as protector of marital concord or Venus in her victory-bringing role.<\/p>

A decisive step was the dedication of the temple of Venus Genetrix<\/em> by Caesar on his new forum. With this the goddess was officially venerated as the ancestral mother of his family and, in a wider sense, of the Roman people.<\/p>

Augustus took this up and integrated Venus, together with the deified Caesar and with Mars, into the religious self-presentation of the new regime. Venus thus became, from a goddess of love, a deity<\/span> of state-sustaining significance.<\/p>

Festivals in honor of Venus took place in April, a month generally associated with growth and with her sphere. On one of these occasions Venus was venerated together with a deity<\/span> of the female transition of women.<\/p>

Alongside this there was the festival of the Vinalia<\/em>, in which Venus also played a part and which was connected with wine. The cult of Venus thus united private concerns, for instance around love and marriage, with highly political references to the origin of Rome and its ruling house.<\/p>

The oldest securely attested urban cult of Venus was connected with the sanctuary<\/span> of Venus Erycina, which was established on the Capitol in the course of the Second Punic War following a pronouncement of the Sibylline Books, an indication of how the goddess was invoked<\/span> as a helping power in times of crisis.<\/p>

A second temple<\/span> of Venus Erycina arose later before the Porta Collina. Alongside this, Venus Verticordia was venerated, who was regarded as protector of marital modesty.<\/p>

The decisive turning point was set by Caesar with the dedication of the temple of Venus Genetrix on his new forum in the year 46 before our era. With this Venus was officially venerated as the ancestral mother of the gens Iulia and, in a wider sense, of the Roman people.<\/p>

Festivals of Venus fell in April. At the Veneralia on the first of April, Venus was venerated together with Fortuna Virilis by women, and at the Vinalia, which were connected with wine, the goddess likewise had her share.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Venus was not a pronounced deity of defense, yet notions of protection and favor were associated with her. In the personal sphere, people turned to Venus in matters of love, of attraction and of marital concord.<\/p>

Her veneration as protector of marriage shows that her cult<\/span> was also meant to serve the strengthening of family bonds.<\/p>

Venus had a particular protective function in her role as ancestral mother and as Venus Victrix<\/em>. Generals of the late Republic placed themselves under her protection and hoped from her for favor in war and in political struggle.<\/p>

Pompey dedicated a temple<\/span> to her in connection with his theater, Caesar invoked her as ancestress and used her name as a watchword in battle. Here Venus appears as a power that grants success, victory and good fortune.<\/p>

Through the Aeneas legend<\/span>, Venus also became the protector of Rome itself. As mother of the forefather and ancestress of the ruling house, she was to watch over the flourishing of the commonwealth. This notion gave the cult of Venus a protective dimension securing the commonwealth.<\/p>

On the whole, the protection of Venus was less the warding off of individual evil powers than the granting of favor, good fortune and success, whether in love, in war or in the destiny of the city.<\/p>

The invocation<\/span> of Venus as a victory-granting power was no mere formula. According to tradition<\/span>, Caesar used the name of the goddess as a watchword in the battle of Pharsalus, and after the victory he redeemed his vow<\/span> with the building of the temple of Venus Genetrix.<\/p>

With this the favor of the goddess was bound directly to the military and political success of the general.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The closest parallel to Venus is the Greek Aphrodite, with whom she was equated early on. From her Venus took over the cycle of myths about birth from the sea, love affairs and the role in the Trojan legendary cycle, as well as essential visual types.<\/p>

Nevertheless Venus remains an independent Roman deity<\/span>. Her possible native origin as a deity<\/span> of grace, but above all her connection with the Aeneas legend<\/span> and the gens Iulia, are specifically Roman and have no counterpart in the Greek Aphrodite.<\/p>

Beyond the Greek sphere, Venus belongs to the widespread type of goddesses of love and beauty who appear in many religions of the Mediterranean and the Near East.<\/p>

Such deities embody attraction, fertility and often also a warlike aspect. Already in antiquity<\/span>, connections between Aphrodite and older oriental goddesses were perceived, which points to a widely diffused field of conceptions.<\/p>

In terms of religious studies<\/span>, Venus is a particularly clear example of how a deity<\/span> can become, through a foundation legend, a component of the political identity of a commonwealth.<\/p>

In research on Roman religion, Venus is treated under several aspects. Discussed are her original character, the moment and the course of the equation with Aphrodite, and above all the political instrumentalization of her cult in the late Republic and the early imperial period.<\/p>

Georg Wissowa and Kurt Latte placed Venus within the Roman world of gods, and more recent works, for instance by Mary Beard, John North and Simon Price as well as by J\u00f6rg R\u00fcpke, emphasize the close interweaving of the cult of Venus and politics.<\/p>

Particular attention is given to the role of Venus under Caesar and Augustus. The temple<\/span> of Venus Genetrix, the coinage with the image of the goddess and her integration into Augustan religious policy are regarded as key examples of how a ruling house used religious tradition for its self-presentation.<\/p>

Vergil’s Aeneid<\/em> too is read in this connection as a document of religious history.<\/p>

In present-day general culture, Venus is one of the best-known ancient deities. Her name stands for a planet, her image shaped European art for centuries, from antiquity<\/span> through the Renaissance into the modern era.<\/p>

In art history, the Venus is a central motif<\/span>. For religious studies<\/span>, Venus remains an instructive example of the layering of Roman religion and of the connection of myth<\/span>, art and political power.<\/p>

Research also emphasizes how the visual arts shaped the religious perception of Venus. The statue types widespread in the Roman imperial period, which went back to Greek models, made the goddess omnipresent in public as well as in domestic space.<\/p>
