They mediate between the distant creator god Bondye and humanity, and appear in an ordered way within the families of the Nanchon, above all Rada and Petwo. They are not gods in the sense of a closed <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the gods of a religion or culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">pantheon<\/span>, but mediator <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span> who mediate between the creator god Bondye and the world of humans.<\/p><p>Bondye is regarded as almighty, yet at the same time as distant and inactive: he created the world but does not intervene directly in everyday life.<\/p><p>Religious practice is therefore directed almost entirely toward the lwa, who are experienced as approachable, reachable, and effective. In <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religious studies<\/span>, this relationship is often described with the concept of the <em>deus otiosus<\/em>, the idle god, whose functions are taken over by active intermediary powers.<\/p><p>Vodou arose in colonial Saint-Domingue from the encounter of West African religions, above all from the area of present-day Benin, Togo, and Nigeria as well as from the Congo region, with the Catholicism of the French slaveholders.<\/p><p>The lwa bear the names and traits of African deities, but over the course of history they have merged with Catholic saints. This connection is not a mere mechanism of disguise, but an independent religious synthesis that persists to this day.<\/p><p>Within <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/vodou\/\">Vodou<\/a>, the lwa are neither clearly good nor evil. They have character, preferences, weaknesses, and demands.<\/p><p>The human being stands in a relationship of mutual obligation with them: whoever inherits or accepts a lwa owes it service, and the lwa in turn owes assistance. This reciprocity clearly distinguishes Vodou from religions in which veneration is directed one-sidedly upward.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s1h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s1h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Name and etymology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s1t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s1t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The word <em>lwa<\/em> is, according to a widespread assumption, derived from a term in the Kwa languages of West Africa, in which related words mean <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which an effect in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> or <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span>.<\/p><p>Older scholarship also connected the term with the French <em>loi<\/em>, law, though this is now regarded as a folk etymology. The Haitian Creole spelling <em>lwa<\/em> has largely prevailed in scholarly literature over the older Frenchified form <em>loa<\/em>.<\/p><p>Alongside the collective term lwa, numerous further designations exist that indicate the function and origin of a spirit. The <em>Nanchon<\/em>, from French <em>nation<\/em>, denote the families or nations of the lwa and point to different African regions of origin. The most important are Rada and Petwo.<\/p><p>Rada lwa are regarded as cool, level-headed, and connected with the Dahomean and Yoruba-related traditions. Petwo lwa are regarded as hot, fast, and forceful; their name is often connected with a historical figure named Don Pedro and associated with the colonial experience of harshness and resistance.<\/p><p>Individual lwa bear proper names that indicate their domain. The title <em>Papa<\/em> or <em>Manman<\/em> frequently appears, emphasizing familial closeness, as do honorific additions such as <em>Met<\/em>, master.<\/p><p>The variety of names reflects the fact that Vodou knows no central teaching authority and has differentiated itself in varying ways regionally, by family, and through individual <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A building that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temples<\/span>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s2 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s2h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s2h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Description and forms of appearance<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s2t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s2t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The lwa have no uniform form. They show themselves above all in two forms: in the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands representatively for a concept or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbolic<\/span> signs with which they are <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The petitioning or invoking address to a deity or power.\" tabindex=\"0\">invoked<\/span>, and in bodily presence during possession.<\/p><p>Each lwa possesses a <em>Veve<\/em>, a complex ground sign that is strewn on the floor with flour, ash, or coffee powder during the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A solemn act performed according to fixed rules.\" tabindex=\"0\">ceremony<\/span> and that, as it were, calls forth the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which an effect in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span>. The veve are not mere symbols but are regarded as effective lines of connection between the worlds.<\/p><p>Fixed attributes are assigned to each lwa: colors, foods, drinks, dances, rhythms, days of the week, and objects. These assignments allow the faithful to recognize a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which an effect in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> and to serve it correctly. A lwa that demands a smoking implement, prefers a particular drink, or performs a particular dance figure thereby reveals itself.<\/p><p>In possession, the lwa rides the believer, which is why the human being is called <em>chwal<\/em>, horse. The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which an effect in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> speaks, eats, dances, and acts through the body of the possessed person, who afterward usually has no memory of what happened.<\/p><p>The Catholic world of images provides a further form of appearance: on the altars of Vodou stand chromolithographs of saints, which at the same time serve as images of the respective lwa.<\/p><p>This double reading of a single image is characteristic of religious experience in Vodou and is not perceived by the faithful as a contradiction.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s3\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s3h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s3h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Mythology and tradition<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s3t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s3t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Vodou possesses no <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the authoritatively recognized body of scriptures of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">canonical<\/span> scripture and no systematically ordered <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of a culture's transmitted narratives about its gods.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span>. The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span> lives in songs, prayers, dances, narratives, and in the practice of the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A building that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temples<\/span>. In them the lwa appear less in a coherent creation <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A transmitted narrative about gods, origins and the order of the world.\" tabindex=\"0\">myth<\/span> than in an abundance of individual stories that explain the character and domain of a spirit.<\/p><p>About Bondye, the creator god, there are hardly any narratives; it is precisely his distance that makes him narratively pale. The mythic energy concentrates on the lwa. Thus Danbala, a serpent figure, is regarded as the oldest <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which an effect in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> and the guardian of cosmic knowledge, and the rainbow figure Ayida Wedo as his companion.<\/p><p>Papa Legba watches at the crossroads and at the gate between the worlds; without his permission no other lwa can approach, which is why he is greeted first at the beginning of every <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A solemn act performed according to fixed rules.\" tabindex=\"0\">ceremony<\/span>.<\/p><p>Kouzen Zaka, a lwa of agriculture, appears as a coarse peasant with a straw bag and pipe; Agwe is regarded as the lord of the sea, of ships, and of wealth; Ezili Freda, as a magnificently dressed woman, embodies love, beauty, and luxury, while the combative Ezili Dantor is reckoned to the Petwo family and stands for maternal harshness and protection.<\/p><p>Ogou, a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which an effect in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> of iron, war, and power, is frequently connected with Saint James.<\/p><p>The family of the Gede, the spirits of the dead, stands for death, but also for earthy zest for life and quick-witted humor; their head, Bawon Samdi, watches over cemetery and grave in tailcoat and top hat, and is regarded at the same time as a helper in serious illness, because no one dies without his allowing it.<\/p><p>These stories are not closed but are made present again and again in the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A solemn act performed according to fixed rules.\" tabindex=\"0\">ceremony<\/span>. The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span> is in this respect less a fixed body of text than a living process in which the lwa themselves come to speak through possession and continue writing their own history.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s4 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s4\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s4h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s4h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Cult and veneration<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s4t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s4t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of religious acts of veneration for a deity or sacred figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult<\/span> of the lwa takes place in the <em>Ounfo<\/em>, the Vodou <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A building that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span>, which is led by an <em>Oungan<\/em> or a <em>Manbo<\/em>, the priest or priestess.<\/p><p>At the center stands the <em>poto-mitan<\/em>, the central pillar, which is regarded as the axis along which the lwa ascend and descend between their world and that of humans. Around it unfold drum music, dance, and song.<\/p><p>The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A solemn act performed according to fixed rules.\" tabindex=\"0\">ceremony<\/span> follows a fixed order. It begins with Catholic prayers and the <em>Priye Ginen<\/em>, a long <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The petitioning or conjuring address of a deity or power.\" tabindex=\"0\">invocation<\/span> that first greets the Rada lwa, then the remaining families. Drums call the spirits forth with their respective rhythms, veve are drawn, foods and animal <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An offering to a deity to express gratitude, petition, or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacrifices<\/span> are offered.<\/p><p>The high point is possession: when a lwa seizes someone present, that person is clothed and provided with the spirit&#8217;s attributes, so that the community can speak directly with the lwa, ask it questions, and present requests.<\/p><p>The veneration is at the same time domestic. Many families maintain a home <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An elevated place or table for offerings and religious acts.\" tabindex=\"0\">altar<\/span> and tend lwa that are passed down over generations.<\/p><p>Important stages are <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A ritual transition by which someone is admitted into a new status or community.\" tabindex=\"0\">initiation<\/span>, the <em>kanzo<\/em>, by which a person is bound more closely to the lwa and admitted into temple service, as well as death rituals in which the life force of a deceased person is brought back from the water and preserved within the family group.<\/p><p>The calendar links the lwa with Catholic feast days, so that the veneration is embedded in the course of the year.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s5h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s5h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Protective practice and the apotropaic<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-lwa-s5t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-lwa-s5t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In Vodou, protection is not a secondary aspect but one of the main tasks of the lwa. Whoever serves a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which an effect in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> faithfully expects from it assistance against misfortune, illness, social threat, and against the interventions of malevolent forces. Protection is not thought of abstractly but concretely: through objects, actions, and bonds.<\/p><p>Among the widespread practices are the <em>pwen<\/em>, a concentrated point of power meant to confer protection or strength, as well as small protective pouches and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A worn object to which a protective, misfortune-averting effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">amulets<\/span> that are blessed and connected with a lwa.<\/p><p>Certain lwa are regarded as especially responsible: a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which an effect in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> that watches at crossroads opens and secures the connection between the worlds; warlike spirits of the Petwo family are asked for defense in times of need.
