Saxo, who as a Danish court cleric questioned eyewitnesses, gives a detailed description of the temple, the statue and the cultic practice.<\/p><p>This source is especially valuable for the history of religion for two reasons: it is close in time, and it comes from the camp of the victors, who saw the statue and the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the worship of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> with their own eyes before they destroyed them.<\/p><p>The second principal source is the &#8220;Chronica Slavorum&#8221; of Helmold of Bosau (around 1170), which arose at the same time as the conquest and rests on direct information from missionary circles.<\/p><p>Helmold describes Svetovid as the &#8220;foremost among all the gods of the Slavs&#8221;, to whom the other gods were merely demigods. The third source is the &#8220;Knytlinga <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A transmitted narrative often with a historical core and miraculous features.\" tabindex=\"0\">saga<\/span>&#8221; (13th century), the Danish royal saga, which likewise deals with the conquest of Arkona.<\/p><p>Further mentions are found in Adam of Bremen (&#8220;Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum&#8221;, 1075), in Thietmar of Merseburg (concerning the early phase of Elbe Slavic paganism, though without an explicit reference to Svetovid) and in Danish annals of the 12th and 13th centuries.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a749920 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"a749920\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-97f33a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"97f33a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Temple and Cult Complex of Arkona<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d105bb5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d105bb5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the worship of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> stood on a promontory at the northeastern tip of R\u00fcgen, protected by a semicircular earthen rampart that sealed off the landward side; the steep coast protected the seaward side.<\/p><p>The archaeological excavations since Carl Schuchhardt (1921) and especially Joachim Herrmann (1962 to 1971) have reconstructed the complex: a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the divine and thereby withdrawn from everyday use.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacred<\/span> precinct of about 4 hectares, in the interior of which stood the temple building itself.<\/p><p>The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the worship of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> was a square wooden construction with red wall hangings and an inner sanctum separated from the outer space by curtains.<\/p><p>Inside stood the main statue of Svetovid. According to Saxo&#8217;s description it was of superhuman size, made of wood, with four heads or faces that looked out toward the four cardinal directions. Two faces pointed forward, two backward, with one pair oriented to the left and the other to the right.<\/p><p>The god held a drinking horn in his right hand; with his left hand he leaned on a bow. On the wall hung his saddle, his bridle and an enormous sword whose blade was adorned with silver fittings.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4a8d3a5 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"4a8d3a5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71e5a3d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"71e5a3d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Iconography and Symbols<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a8327e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1a8327e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The most distinctive iconographic feature of Svetovid is his four heads. This &#8220;four-facedness&#8221; is generally interpreted as a cosmological <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands in place of an idea or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbol<\/span>: the god looks in all cardinal directions and surveys the whole world.<\/p><p>A similar four-faced depiction of a god is known from the famous Zbruch <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An image or statue venerated as divine.\" tabindex=\"0\">idol<\/span> (recovered in 1848 in Galicia, today in the Archaeological Museum of Krak\u00f3w), a limestone column with four reliefs of gods on a cube-shaped head.<\/p><p>Whether the Zbruch <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An image or statue venerated as divine.\" tabindex=\"0\">idol<\/span> represents Svetovid or another <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> is disputed; the formal kinship is nonetheless evident and supports the assumption that multi-headedness was a typical feature of West and East Slavic divine <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The study of the content of images and their meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">iconography<\/span>.<\/p><p>The drinking horn in the right hand plays a central role in the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A site or institution at which a divine pronouncement is sought.\" tabindex=\"0\">oracle<\/span> <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An ordered sequence of symbolic actions with religious or cultural meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritual<\/span> (see below). Bow and sword are warrior attributes. Every Rani had to pay a fixed sum to the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the worship of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> each year; a third of all booty from military campaigns was handed over to Svetovid.<\/p><p>The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the worship of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> possessed its own soldiers and cavalry (three hundred horsemen according to Saxo), who stood under the supreme command of the high priest. Because of the erosion of the steep coast, a large part of the former fort complex had already broken off and sunk into the sea by that time.<\/p><p>The second great excavation period under Joachim Herrmann between 1962 and 1971 produced additional finds and a more differentiated stratigraphy. Herrmann&#8217;s publications (&#8220;Die Slawen in Deutschland&#8221;, Berlin 1985; &#8220;Slawische Burgen in Deutschland&#8221;, Berlin 1976) have remained the standard work of Baltic Slavic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The discipline that studies past cultures by means of material finds.\" tabindex=\"0\">archaeology<\/span>.<\/p><p>They have broadly confirmed Saxo&#8217;s description of the temple, with finds that allow the rectangular building described by Saxo and the inner sanctum to be demonstrated.<\/p><p>The erosion of the coast continues steadily. Today (as of the 2020s) only about 60 percent of the original fort precinct is preserved; the remaining 40 percent have fallen into the sea over the last two centuries. On the cube-shaped head are four faces that recall Saxo&#8217;s description of Svetovid.<\/p><p>The identification of the individual reliefs with specific Slavic gods is disputed. Boris Rybakov attempted to identify all the figures depicted with known gods (Perun, Mokosh, Lada, Dazhbog); these identifications are, however, not convincingly secured.<\/p><p>Only the formal kinship of the four-faced composition with Saxo&#8217;s description is certain. Triglav (three-headed) was worshipped in Stettin (today Szczecin) and in Brandenburg; his main cult site in Stettin was destroyed in the 12th century by Bishop Otto of Bamberg.<\/p><p>Svarozhich (son of Svarog) had a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sacred place dedicated to the worship of a deity.\" tabindex=\"0\">sanctuary<\/span> in Rethra (possibly in present-day Mecklenburg), which is described by Adam of Bremen and Thietmar of Merseburg. Rugievit (seven-headed) and Porevit (five-headed) were likewise worshipped on R\u00fcgen, in Garz or Charenza; their sanctuaries were destroyed in 1168 at the same time as Arkona.<\/p><p>The high concentration of multi-headed gods among the Baltic Slavs is a peculiarity of this region. The East Slavic tradition knows no comparable multi-headedness; the Vladimir <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the gods of a religion or culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">pantheon<\/span> of Kievan Rus shows single-headed gods.<\/p><p>Multi-headedness is therefore a West Slavic and Baltic peculiarity, to be interpreted in the history of religion as a tradition of its own.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a696ddb e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"a696ddb\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5e2b95b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5e2b95b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Horse Oracle Tradition<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42259d6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42259d6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The horse <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A site or institution at which a divine response is sought.\" tabindex=\"0\">oracle<\/span> of Arkona is especially revealing for the history of religion because it continues an Indo-European tradition attested in numerous other cultures.<\/p><p>Tacitus describes in &#8220;Germania&#8221;, Chapter 10, a similar horse <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A site or institution at which a divine response is sought.\" tabindex=\"0\">oracle<\/span> of the Germanic peoples: sacred white horses were consulted in royal elections and decisions of war, and their movement over crossed spears was interpreted. Among the Scythians, the Hittites and the Persian magi, similar horse <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A site or institution at which a divine response is sought.\" tabindex=\"0\">oracles<\/span> are attested.<\/p><p>The hippomanteia (horse <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The interpretation of signs in order to perceive the hidden or the future.\" tabindex=\"0\">divination<\/span>) belongs to the oldest Indo-European religious techniques. Vladimir Toporov evaluated this tradition systematically in Indo-European comparative <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the inherited narratives of the gods of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span> and pointed to its significance for royal election and decisions of war in Indo-European societies.<\/p><p>The Svetovid <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A site or institution at which a divine response is sought.\" tabindex=\"0\">oracle<\/span> of Arkona is therefore not an isolated phenomenon but a late and especially well documented version of a widely distributed religious complex.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ccc5cf3 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"ccc5cf3\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43f48d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"43f48d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Economic and Political Significance of Arkona<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-513f951 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"513f951\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Arkona was not only a religious centre but also an economic and political power of the first rank in the western Baltic. The Rani, the Slavic tribe that inhabited the island of R\u00fcgen, conducted far-reaching maritime trade and dominated the Baltic amber trade.<\/p><p>The temple treasure of Arkona was so legendary that German and Danish sources too speak of it. Saxo describes vast quantities of gold, silver, fabrics and precious stones that lay in the treasury as tribute, spoils or donations.<\/p><p>The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the worship of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> had its own soldiers and cavalry (three hundred horsemen according to Saxo), who stood under the supreme command of the high priest and undertook military campaigns in the name of the god.<\/p><p>This interweaving of the military and the religious is unique within the Slavic sphere and recalls the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the worship of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> states of the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Epoch of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BC to 600 AD.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancient<\/span> Near Eastern high cultures (Sumer, Babylon) more than the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the gods of a religion or culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">pantheon<\/span> structures of the rest of the Indo-European world. It makes Arkona a case of particular interest for the history of religion.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-962925c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"962925c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c896b7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7c896b7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Destruction and Its Long-Term Consequences<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-472d6f4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"472d6f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The destruction of Arkona on 15 June 1168 by the Danish-Pomerelian army under Valdemar I and Bishop Absalon marks the definitive end of the pagan religion in the Baltic region.<\/p><p>While other West Slavic gods (Triglav in Stettin, Svarozhich in Rethra) had already disappeared decades earlier, Arkona was the last great pagan stronghold of Central Europe.<\/p><p>Its destruction is treated in Danish historiography as an epochal date and is, for the history of religion, a turning point: with Arkona, Slavic pagan religiosity ended as an official practice.<\/p><p>In the following decades the Rani population was forcibly Christianized. The island of R\u00fcgen was placed under the bishopric of Roskilde, later under the bishopric of Schwerin.<\/p><p>Until the 15th century the Rani language remained alive in some places, but then disappeared completely in favour of German. Czech, Polish and Ukrainian writers referred to him as a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands in place of an idea or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbol<\/span> of an independent Slavic high culture that had been destroyed by German and Danish expansion.<\/p><p>Joseph Koll\u00e1r, Aleksander Br\u00fcckner and other pan-Slavic thinkers repeatedly took up Svetovid in their works. In the contemporary Rodnovery and neo-pagan movement, Svetovid is one of the most important chief deities of the reconstructed pantheon, often portrayed as a pan-Slavic chief deity.<\/p><p>Today Arkona is an archaeological park and is among the most visited cultural-historical sites of R\u00fcgen.
