His wife is Ayizan, the keeper of the marketplaces and of ceremonial purity. Since the Iroko tree does not occur in the Caribbean, its function was transferred to other trees, above all to the mapou trees (Ceiba pentandra, the cotton tree), which in Haiti are regarded as the seat of the loa.<\/p><p>Karen McCarthy Brown and Leslie Desmangles have shown how this geographical adaptation preserved the religious substance while transforming its concrete botanical anchoring.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1dd83ff e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"1dd83ff\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5795a5d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5795a5d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Function and Nature<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-443ee69 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"443ee69\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Loko is above all the loa of the healing arts. He possesses the knowledge of the healing powers of all plants, roots, leaves and barks, and passes this knowledge on to the Houngans and Mambos.<\/p><p>In the course of their <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A ritual transition through which someone is admitted into a new status or community.\" tabindex=\"0\">initiation<\/span>, every Vodou priest is placed under the protection of Loko, because without the knowledge of healing plants the priest cannot fulfil his task. Loko is thus regarded as the true founder and patron of the Vodou priesthood.<\/p><p>In \u00abDivine Horsemen\u00bb, Maya Deren described Loko&#8217;s function as a spiritual teacher. In his manifestations he appears as an old, wise man with slow, dignified movements, who transmits his knowledge orally.<\/p><p>This teaching function makes him one of the central figures of the Vodou initiation rites. Without the consent of Loko a person cannot be initiated as a priest.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6afafba e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"6afafba\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-598ff3d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"598ff3d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Loko and Ayizan<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c40a162 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c40a162\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Loko&#8217;s wife Ayizan is an equally significant figure of the Vodou pantheon. She is venerated as the keeper of the marketplace and as the patroness of ceremonial purity.<\/p><p>Her symbols are the palm fronds that are hung up in Vodou <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temples<\/span>, and the market scales. At every <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A ritual transition through which someone is admitted into a new status or community.\" tabindex=\"0\">initiation<\/span> Ayizan is <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The petitioning or invoking address to a deity or power.\" tabindex=\"0\">invoked<\/span> together with Loko in order to bless and protect the initiate. Together the two form the patron couple of the Vodou priesthood.<\/p><p>In \u00abHaiti, History, and the Gods\u00bb, Joan Dayan has worked out the gender-political significance of this couple. Loko and Ayizan represent the male and female form of the spiritual teaching function and thus stand for the equality of Houngans and Mambos in Vodou.<\/p><p>This <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands representatively for a concept or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbolic<\/span> equality is reflected in concrete practice, in which female priestesses hold the same authority as male priests.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca390e1 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"ca390e1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89f0e9f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"89f0e9f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Mapou Tree as the Seat of Loko<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c29a81c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c29a81c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The mapou tree (Ceiba pentandra) is the central botanical seat of Loko in Haiti. These large trees, often centuries old, are regarded as <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the divine and thereby withdrawn from everyday use.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacred<\/span> in many villages and are frequently the setting of Vodou rituals.<\/p><p><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A gift to a deity, in order to express thanks, a request or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">Offerings<\/span> are presented at them, petitioners visit them, and important assemblies are held beneath them. The veneration of the mapou tree has a political dimension: famous mapou trees are regarded as gathering places of the historical resistance against colonial rule.<\/p><p>Alfred M\u00e9traux reported that in his research period (the 1940s and 1950s) the felling of a mapou tree was regarded as a grave misfortune that could call down the wrath of Loko.<\/p><p>This taboo has lost some of its force over the past decades through environmental destruction and urbanisation, which is perceived in Haitian folk religion as a sign of decline. Initiatives for the protection of old mapou trees developed in Haiti in the 21st century and combine religious and ecological concerns.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-311bd3f e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"311bd3f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-597471e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"597471e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Initiation Rites and Loko<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1babfc5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1babfc5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The most important <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An ordered sequence of symbolic actions with religious or cultural meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritual<\/span> function of Loko lies in the initiation rites of the Houngans and Mambos. The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A ritual transition through which someone is admitted into a new status or community.\" tabindex=\"0\">initiation<\/span> as a Vodou priest is a complex process, often lasting several weeks, in which the initiate passes through various phases of seclusion, purification and spiritual instruction.<\/p><p>Loko is invoked at the beginning of this process to take the initiate into his hand, and at the end, to attest the initiate&#8217;s new dignity.<\/p><p>In \u00abMama Lola\u00bb, Karen McCarthy Brown described the practice of initiation in detail from the perspective of a Haitian American priestess.<\/p><p>There Loko appears as the central teaching figure, who appears to the initiate in a dream, tests him and assigns to him his specific task within Vodou practice. This personal relationship with Loko accompanies the priest or priestess for a lifetime.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f55b05 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"0f55b05\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df37ca6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"df37ca6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Symbolism and Attributes<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cbf8c3f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cbf8c3f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The central symbols of Loko are the tree, the forge fire (in which healing plants are smoked), the drumsticks (as a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands in place of an idea or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbol<\/span> of priestly authority) and the \u00abasson\u00bb, the ritual rattle with snake vertebrae, which is the most important insignia of the Vodou priest.<\/p><p>Whoever receives the asson has completed the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A ritual transition through which someone is admitted into a new status or community.\" tabindex=\"0\">initiation<\/span> and is thereby entitled to carry out their own Vodou rites.<\/p><p>The colours of Loko are white and golden yellow, often combined with green accents that mark his connection to vegetation.
