Its geometric form is clear and memorable. At the same time, the Valknut is one of those signs whose meaning has not been fully clarified.

The Valknut almost always appears in a particular context. It occurs near depictions associated with the god Odin, with battle and with death. This observation is the most important clue to its interpretation. From the context one can infer the realm to which the sign belonged.

In religious studies, the Valknut is treated with caution. There is no written source from the Viking Age that explains the sign. Everything said about its meaning rests on inferences from the find context. This situation calls for a careful presentation that clearly separates secure knowledge from conjecture.

The Valknut is therefore an instructive example. It shows that not every old sign can be fully understood. Some symbols have been handed down without their exact meaning being handed down with them. An honest presentation names this limit instead of concealing it. This is precisely what makes the Valknut an interesting subject.

The name and its origin

The name Valknut sounds ancient, but is in truth modern. It does not occur in the surviving Old Norse texts. How the people of the Viking Age named the sign is not known. The name was formed only in more recent times, in order to be able to designate the sign at all.

The modern name is made up of two Old Norse words. The first denotes those fallen in battle, the slain. The second means knot. Taken together, this yields the meaning knot of the slain. This name sums up the supposed meaning of the sign in a single word.

It is important to be aware of this origin of the name. The name is already an interpretation. It suggests that the sign has to do with the fallen and with Odin.

This interpretation is well founded, but it is not secured by an ancient source. The name must not be confused with an attested finding.

This distinction is not a mere side point. It concerns the core of a careful handling of historical signs. A modern name can be practical and apt, and yet it remains a construct of scholarship. With the Valknut this situation is especially clear, because here even the name itself is a modern formation.

Form: three interlocking triangles

The Valknut consists of three equilateral triangles interlocked with one another. The triangles interlock in such a way that none can be released without the others. From this interlocking arises the unmistakable form of the sign. It appears both ordered and artful.

The surviving examples show two basic forms. In one form the Valknut is formed from a single continuous line that interweaves and at the end returns to itself. In the other form the three triangles consist of separate lines. Both forms occur.

This distinction is significant for the interpretation. The form made from a single line stands close to the endless, unbroken signs to which many cultures ascribed a protective effect.

A closed line without beginning or end was regarded as a boundary that lets nothing through. Whether this notion played a role with the Valknut, however, cannot be proven.

The clear geometric form has made the Valknut easily recognizable. It could be carved into stone and cut into wood. It was precisely this simple and yet artful form that helped the sign endure through the centuries. Especially important are the picture stones of the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. On some of these stones the Valknut appears within larger pictorial scenes. These stones are among the richest sources for the Norse pictorial world.

Another significant find comes from the ship burial of Oseberg in Norway. The Valknut is applied to a bed from this rich burial. The sign is also found on a few further objects of the Viking Age. The number of secured attestations, however, remains modest.

What is revealing is not only that the Valknut occurs, but also where it occurs. On the picture stones it stands near scenes that show horses, warriors and armed figures. Often these scenes can be linked to Odin and to events surrounding death in battle. This context is the key to the interpretation.

The findings are thus clear in their observation, but limited in their scope. The few pieces allow one to name a realm to which the Valknut belongs. They do not allow one to establish its exact meaning. On the picture stones the sign appears repeatedly in scenes that can be related to this god. In Norse religion Odin was, among other things, the god of the fallen and of war.

According to Norse tradition, Odin took to himself those killed in battle. They were brought to Valhalla, the hall of the slain. There they prepared for the great final battle. Odin thus held sway over the fate of warriors in death. He was the lord over the fallen.

Against this background it is plausible to interpret the Valknut as connected with this role of Odin. It could be a sign for the slain and for their bond to the god. This interpretation explains why the sign appears precisely in scenes of death. It fits well into the findings.

It remains, however, an interpretation, not an established fact. The connection to Odin is well founded, but it rests solely on the pictorial context. There is no ancient source that expressly assigns the Valknut to Odin. Scholarship therefore speaks here of a probable, not a proven, attribution.

Knot of the slain: attempts at interpretation

From the connection to Odin and the fallen several attempts at interpretation arise. One of them ties in with a particular ability that the god Odin possessed according to tradition. Odin could paralyze or free warriors in battle. He could bring fear and immobility over them or take it from them.

The Old Norse texts speak in this connection of a kind of fetter that Odin could place on warriors or loosen. This notion of a mental fetter fits strikingly well with a knot sign.

A knot binds and can be loosened. Some scholars therefore interpret the Valknut as an image of this binding and loosening power.

Another line of interpretation emphasizes the number three and the three triangles. The number three played an important role in the Norse world of ideas. The Valknut could refer to such a triad, without it being possible to say exactly which one was meant. This interpretation too remains a proposal.

All of these interpretations have their justification, and all remain uncertain. They show in which direction the sign points, without fixing it definitively. An honest presentation lists the attempts at interpretation side by side. It names their strengths and their limits, instead of presenting a single interpretation as secured.

The uncertain meaning

With the Valknut it is especially important to name the limits of knowledge clearly. There is no source from the Viking Age that explains the sign. There is no name that has been handed down. What remains are a limited number of finds and the pictorial context in which they stand.

From these findings a realm can be inferred. The Valknut belongs in the vicinity of Odin, of battle and of death. This much can be said with good reasons. An exact meaning, a fixed formula or a specific protective function cannot be derived from it.

In popular accounts the Valknut is often interpreted with great certainty. Clear meanings are ascribed to it, as if they were secured. A factual examination counters that this certainty is not covered by the sources. The confidence of the popular interpretations is greater than the certainty of the findings.

The admission of this uncertainty is not a flaw, but part of an honest presentation. The Norse and Germanic pictorial world knew several signs based on interwoven lines and on knots. Interwoven bands and interlace patterns are among the most striking features of Viking Age art. The Valknut fits into this fondness for the interlaced.

A related sign is the triquetra, the triple knot made of three interlocking arcs. It too is formed from a continuous, interwoven line. Triquetra and Valknut both belong to the knot signs of Northern Europe, even if their history and their distribution differ.

Knot signs are found far beyond the North. Many cultures know interwoven, endless patterns to which an ordering or protective meaning is ascribed. The principle of the line without beginning or end is widespread. Whether the Valknut deliberately belongs to this large family cannot be said with certainty.

Placing it within the world of knot signs nevertheless aids understanding. It shows that the Valknut is not an entirely isolated phenomenon. It belongs to a broad tradition in which interlocking, interlace and the closed line played a role. Within this tradition the Valknut, through its strict triangular form, holds its own distinctive, unmistakable place.

Reception today

The Valknut is widely known today. It is one of the common signs associated with the Viking Age and with Norse culture. As a jewelry pendant and as a motif it appears in many contexts. Its clear form has given it great visibility.

In modern pagan movements that draw on Norse religion, the Valknut is used as a sign. There it often stands in connection with Odin and with a commitment to the traditional world of belief. In this usage the sign takes on a new, present-day meaning.

Like many Norse signs, the Valknut too is not protected from appropriation. It has happened that such symbols were claimed by groups whose concerns have nothing to do with the historical meaning. Whoever depicts the Valknut should be aware of this tension and show the sign in its historical context.

Original attestations of the Valknut can be seen on the picture stones of Gotland and in the finds of the Viking Age, which are preserved in Northern European museums.

They show a sign that hints at much and reveals little.
