Originally the Adinkra symbols appear primarily on cloth. The so-called Adinkra cloth is a garment on which the signs are printed in rows and panels. It is one of the best-known products of Akan culture.<\/p>

The Adinkra cloth traditionally held a special place at funerals and in mourning. It was worn on occasions of farewell. This use is also connected to the name, which is associated with the idea of taking leave.<\/p>

The choice of signs on a cloth was not arbitrary. It could carry a message, for example about the deceased, about the mourners, or about the values the occasion was meant to call to mind<\/span>. The cloth thus became a readable garment.<\/p>

The dye for printing is obtained from plant materials, primarily from the bark of certain trees. This bark is boiled and reduced until a dark, durable printing paste is produced. Preparing the dye is a separate, labor-intensive step.<\/p>

When printing, the cloth is divided into panels, often using a comb or a similar tool. The signs are then stamped into these panels. This creates the ordered, row-structured pattern of the Adinkra cloth.<\/p>

The making of Adinkra is therefore a craft with defined steps and inherited knowledge. Cutting the stamps, preparing the dye, and printing the cloth all require experience. This craft is still practiced in certain parts of Ghana today.<\/p>

The stamps cut from calabash shell are small, and each carries only a single sign. The carver must work the curved surface of the shell precisely. The dye is cooked down from tree bark over several hours into a thick, black paste.<\/p>
