He is the patron of smiths, of bronze casters, of potters and, in general, of craftspeople who work with fire. In Etruscan bronze art, which ranked among the highest production achievements of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The epoch of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BCE to 600 CE.\" tabindex=\"0\">antiquity<\/span>, his patronage is especially important.<\/p><p>In <em>Etruscan Bronzes<\/em>, Larissa Bonfante worked out the connection between Sethlans and Etruscan bronze art. Jean-Rene Jannot and Nancy Thomson de Grummond likewise treat him in their works on Etruscan religion.<\/p><p>Sethlans, the god of the forge and fire, belongs to a religion whose interest for religious studies lies in its mediating position between the Greek-Mediterranean and the Italic-Roman world. That this Etruscan <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span> is regarded as independent is the result of the work of Massimo Pallottino, Jacques Heurgon, Sybille Haynes, Mauro Cristofani and Giovanni Colonna.<\/p><p>Sethlans, as the clearly responsible patron of fire-bound handcraft, illustrates that Etruscan <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The scholarly doctrine of God and of the belief of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theology<\/span> knew a distinctly structured <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the gods of a religion or culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">pantheon<\/span> with fixed hierarchies and spheres of function. The earlier notion of a &#8216;mysterious&#8217; or &#8216;alien&#8217; belief in gods is inaccurate; this is an independent form of Mediterranean religion.<\/p><p>Sethlans makes the mediating role of the Etruscans easy to read: his traits combine Greek stimuli with a profile of his own and continue to act within Roman religion. In the religious history of Italy, the Etruscans stood between Greek influence and the emerging Roman religion, which holds particular interest for religious studies.<\/p><p>Sethlans was formerly interpreted almost exclusively as an Etruscan Hephaestus. The religious-ethnological research of recent decades, by contrast, has acknowledged Etruscan religion as a self-contained system, independent in terms of the phenomenology of religion, and has replaced the older tendency to understand it as &#8216;derivative&#8217; of Greek religion with a more differentiated view.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-sethlans-s1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-sethlans-s1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-sethlans-s1h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-sethlans-s1h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Name and Etymology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-sethlans-s1c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-sethlans-s1c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-sethlans-s1t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-sethlans-s1t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The name Sethlans is attested on Etruscan mirrors and inscriptions. A secure etymological meaning has not been reconstructed. Helmut Rix&#8217;s <em>Editio Minor<\/em> documents the evidence.<\/p><p>Sethlans also appears under epithets that specify his craft functions. Scholarship discusses a possible connection with the North African weather god Seth, but remains uncertain. An independent Etruscan etymology is more likely.<\/p><p>The name Sethlans is secured epigraphically, yet the Etruscan language is regarded as isolated within language families, or as a member of a presumed &#8216;Tyrsenian&#8217; family to which Lemnian and Raetic might also belong. Since the 19th century, scholarship has sought to decipher the texts without bringing this work to a close.<\/p><p>The evidence for the name Sethlans on mirrors and inscriptions is recorded in Helmut Rix&#8217;s Editio Minor, the fundamental epigraphic collection of the Etruscan language corpus. The Thesaurus Linguae Etruscae and the online database ETP (Etruscan Texts Project) are now available in addition.<\/p><p>The discussion of the etymology of Sethlans is bound up with the broader question of the origin of the Etruscans. Herodotus named Lydia as the source, while Dionysius of Halicarnassus argued for an Italic origin. This is important for religious history, because possible references to Asia Minor cults depend on it.<\/p><p>The linkage of language research and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A text incised or carved into a solid support.\" tabindex=\"0\">inscription<\/span> research also shapes work on theonyms such as Sethlans today. He is sometimes shown limping, which is taken directly from the Greek Hephaestus tradition (Hephaestus was cast down from Olympus by Zeus and limped from then on).<\/p><p>On Etruscan mirrors (4th and 3rd centuries BCE) Sethlans appears in mythological scenes, often with an inscription. One important scene shows him at the birth of Menrva from Tinia&#8217;s head, where he serves as the birth helper: a direct parallel to the Greek Hephaestus, who does the same at the birth of Athena.<\/p><p>Sethlans appears above all on mirrors, and thus belongs to that body of imagery rich for the phenomenology of religion which carries our knowledge of the Etruscans through mirrors, vases, tomb painting and bronzes. Larissa Bonfante acknowledged this visual language in her studies as an independent tradition, not as merely derivative.<\/p><p>Although Sethlans is encountered chiefly on mirrors, the Etruscan tomb painting of Tarquinia, Cerveteri and Vulci remains a first-rank source for Etruscan religion and eschatology. Its banquet, dance and music depictions, as well as its mythological episodes, present the beyond as a continuation of life.<\/p><p>Sethlans appears on mirrors mostly in scenic contexts, for instance at the birth of Menrva, and thus fits into Etruscan <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The study of pictorial content and its meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">iconography<\/span>, which favours multi-figure scenes, narrative references and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sign that stands representatively for a concept or meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">symbolic<\/span> condensations. This visual language is studied by Etruscan religious iconography.<\/p><p>The mirrors with Sethlans often combine several mythological references in a small space, which is characteristic of Etruscan visual art: a single piece can carry numerous allusions at once. The birth of Menrva, the Aphrodite-Hephaestus relationship and the forging of divine weapons are attested in Etruscan visual art.<\/p><p>Specifically Etruscan narratives are less well attested. On some mirrors Sethlans appears in scenes that have no Greek model: original adaptations or creations of the Etruscan tradition.<\/p><p>For Sethlans too there are no fully formulated myths, since Etruscan <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the transmitted tales of gods of a culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">mythology<\/span> is not transmitted in elaborated narrative texts in the way Greek or Roman mythology is. It must be inferred from pictorial sources, inscriptions and the Greco-Roman secondary tradition, which calls for particular methodical caution.<\/p><p>Sethlans is closely modelled on the Greek Hephaestus and illustrates the multilayered relationship of the two mythologies. The Etruscans adapted numerous Greek myths about Achilles, Odysseus or Oedipus and at the same time gave them their own accents. Such an <em>interpretatio<\/em> can reflect a real kinship in religious history, but it can also conceal differences.<\/p><p>What speaks for Sethlans as god of fire and the forge is above all pictorial testimony. On Etruscan bronze mirrors, a rich pictorial source of the 4th and 3rd centuries before our era, scenes appear with names of gods in Etruscan inscription.<\/p><p>On some of these mirrors a figure with the name Sethlans is depicted, at times in connection with the birth of <em>Menrva<\/em> from the head of <em>Tinia<\/em>, a scene that takes up the Greek model of the birth of Athena, in which Hephaestus opens the skull.<\/p><p>Alongside this stands the question of the relationship to <em>Velchans<\/em> or <em>Velch<\/em>, another name that is connected in research with the sphere of fire or the forge. Whether these are two names of one <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span>, regional variants or different figures has not been conclusively clarified.<\/p><p>This finding is typical of Etruscan religion: names of gods are attested, but their exact delimitation and function can often only be determined hypothetically. Whoever depicts Sethlans should mark the identification with Hephaestus and Vulcanus as plausible, but not as
