Unlike the Gorgoneion and the Pazuzu amulet<\/span>, however, the \u00c6gishj\u00e1lmur shows no face and no figure. It is an abstract, geometric sign. Its terror lies not in an image but in the power attributed to it.<\/p>

In this the \u00c6gishj\u00e1lmur resembles rather the pentagram, which is likewise an abstract sign with a protective meaning. The \u00c6gishj\u00e1lmur combines geometric clarity with the idea of deterrence.<\/p>
