Through it a cord or a fine chain was drawn, so that the lunula could be worn as a pendant.

The material of the lunula depended on the family’s means. For the daughters of wealthy families it was made of gold. A golden lunula was a precious piece of jewelry.

Poorer families could not afford gold. The moon goddess Luna and the goddess Diana, who was associated with the moon and with protection, belong here.

Diana was regarded, among other things, as a protector of women and as a helper in childbirth. From there and from neighboring cultures the crescent-moon amulet spread further.

The Etruscans too, from whom the Romans adopted numerous customs and signs, knew crescent-moon amulets. The Roman lunula stands within this line of adoption and transmission.

Within the Roman world the lunula was widespread. The numerous finds, from simple bronze pieces to precious golden examples, attest its broad use.

With the expansion of Roman influence the lunula spread as well. It has been found in many parts of the Roman Empire.

The lunula is thus a good example of a protective sign with very old roots. It is not a Roman invention but the Roman form of an age-old, widespread idea, the protective power of the crescent moon.

Reception today

The lunula as a Roman child’s amulet is no longer a living custom today. It is attested by numerous finds and can be seen in the collections of many museums, above all the precious golden pieces.

For the study of Roman everyday culture the lunula is an important source. Together with the bulla it shows how Roman society arranged the protection of its children.

The crescent moon as an ornamental form is moreover alive to this day. Crescent-shaped pendants continue to be worn, even if the direct connection to the Roman lunula is usually not conscious in this.

The lunula is thus a striking example of a child’s amulet of antiquity. It was intended specifically for the girl and linked protection with the ancient notion of the power of the crescent moon.

Together with the bulla, the lunula attests that the protection of children was a central concern of the Roman world.
