Here the teacher component comes especially to the fore: Tse-che-nako is the first Thinking One, who brings the world into existence through her thinking.<\/p><p>The standard English translation <em>Spider Grandmother<\/em> has been common in American Anglo-Saxon literature on Indigenous peoples since the late 19th century. Her primary form is that of a small black spider living in an earth cave or beneath a rock.<\/p><p>She can, however, transform at any moment into a dignified old woman with white hair and a wrinkled face, appearing in a traditional Pueblo dress and speaking staff in hand.<\/p><p>In Hopi <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The study of pictorial content and its meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">iconography<\/span> she is often depicted with a small spider figure on her shoulder, visualizing her dual form.<\/p><p>On surviving Pueblo ceramics from the 11th to 14th centuries (Mimbres, Anasazi) spider motifs appear that are archaeologically often interpreted as Spider Grandmother manifestations. This attribution is speculative, however, since we lack the emic designation of these archaeological cultures.<\/p><p>On modern Pueblo weavings and pottery, particularly in the Navajo woven-rug <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>, the Spider Grandmother <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A recurring thematic element in art or narrative.\" tabindex=\"0\">motif<\/span> is a central element.<\/p><p>The woven rugs often contain a <em>Spider Hole<\/em>, a small intentional weaving flaw at the center of the rug that honors Spider Woman, because a perfect work would call her teacher status into question. Spider Grandmother encounters the young heroes Monster Slayer and Born-for-Water as they search for their father <em>Tsohanoai<\/em> (the sun).<\/p><p>She teaches them the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special actions or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magical<\/span> songs and gives them the protective <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A worn object to which a protective, misfortune-averting effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">amulets<\/span> with whose help they later defeat the monsters of the world.
