Within Lakota <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic study of God and the beliefs of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theology<\/span>, he is one of the highest wakan aspects, though not in the naively sublime manner of the upper Four (Sun, Moving Energy, Earth, Stone), but rather as a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the earth or the underworld; in ancient religion the gods and spirits of the depths (Hades, the Erinyes, Demeter chthonia).\" tabindex=\"0\">chthonic<\/span>-ambivalent figure connected to the lower wakan aspects.<\/p><p>Sword (in the James Walker texts) counts him among the group of <em>Wakan kuya<\/em>, the subordinate <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the divine and thereby withdrawn from everyday use.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacred<\/span> beings.<\/p><p>From a religious-studies perspective, Iktomi is the paradigmatic trickster: a being who simultaneously holds creator functions (he is depicted in some narratives as creator of humanity or as teacher of the first cultural practices) and disruptor functions (he lies, cheats, steals, violates, deceives and entices, sometimes with devastating consequences).<\/p><p>This dual nature was described by Paul Radin in the classic study <em>The Trickster<\/em> (1956) as the foundational structure of all Indigenous American trickster beings.<\/p><p>Structurally comparable beings in other Indigenous traditions include the North American <a href=\"\/en\/coyote-trickster-of-native-americans\/\">Coyote<\/a>, the raven-like trickster of the Northwest Coast peoples, the hare trickster of the southeastern tribes, the West African Anansi (also a spider!), and the Germanic Loki.<\/p><p>The strong structural convergence between Iktomi and the West African Anansi tradition (both spider tricksters) has led some scholars of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religion<\/span> to speculate about genetic connections, for which there is no historical evidence; these are most likely convergent developments.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-iktomi-s1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-iktomi-s1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-iktomi-s1h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-iktomi-s1h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Name and Etymology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-iktomi-s1c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-iktomi-s1c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-iktomi-s1t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-iktomi-s1t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Lakota name <em>Iktomi<\/em> literally means <em>spider<\/em>. The diminutive form <em>Iktomi<\/em> roughly corresponds to the English <em>little spider<\/em> or <em>spiderling<\/em>. This linguistic reduction of the trickster figure is semantically significant: Iktomi is not a grand, awe-inspiring figure, but a small, cunning, often comic being.<\/p><p>In the wider Sioux dialects, variants exist: <em>Unktomi<\/em> among the Dakota of Minnesota, <em>Ikto<\/em> in contracted form, and the structurally analogous <em>Wisaka<\/em> among the Algonquian-speaking Cree. The latter is structurally similar but linguistically independent.<\/p><p>The Lakota verb <em>iktomi-ya<\/em> means <em>to act like Iktomi<\/em>, that is, to act cunningly, deceitfully, cautiously or playfully. This verbalization of the name shows that Iktomi is not merely a mythological figure but a behavioral category present in everyday life, used in Lakota upbringing as a negative example.<\/p><p>The trickster etymology is of religious-philosophical interest. His basic form is that of a small, often brightly colored spider living in an irregular web.<\/p><p>He can, however, transform into any other being, most frequently into a young warrior with long hair and fine clothing, into a wise old man, into a woman, or into various animals.<\/p><p>In traditional Lakota narratives, Iktomi is usually described as a wandering warrior who travels alone across the prairie, sneaks into foreign camps and plays his tricks there.<\/p><p>His typical trick is to disguise himself as a helpful relative in order to gain access to women, food or horses, which he then steals or uses to deceive the family.<\/p><p>In surviving Lakota drum paintings and shield paintings, Iktomi occasionally appears as a spider-like figure with a human face, with wide-set eyes and a cunning smile. In one famous narrative he tries to insult the Four Winds by telling them he can run faster than all of them combined.<\/p><p>The winds initially do not respond; when Iktomi begins his run, they send a tornado after him that tears him to pieces.<\/p><p>The pieces are scattered by the Four Winds to the four cardinal directions, and from each piece a new Iktomi grows, which is why the world has since been full of Iktomis.
