class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> of the Lima region and the central Andean Pacific coast, whose history of veneration predates the Inca Empire.<\/p><p>His main <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure serving the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span>, the monumental adobe complex of Pachacamac (today an archaeological zone south of Lima), already existed in the Lima culture (ca. 200 to 700 CE), was then expanded in the Wari phase (700 to 1000), enlarged in the Ychsma phase (1100 to 1470), and finally integrated by the Inca into their empire without losing its distinct character.<\/p><p>The Spanish chroniclers, above all Miguel de Estete, who visited the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sacred place dedicated to the veneration of a deity.\" tabindex=\"0\">sanctuary<\/span> in 1533 together with Hernando Pizarro and reported on it, describe Pachakamak as <em>tan grande templo y tan reverenciado<\/em>, the largest and most venerated sanctuary of the Andes.<\/p><p>His <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A site or institution at which a divine pronouncement is sought.\" tabindex=\"0\">oracle<\/span> was famous throughout the entire Inca Empire and was even consulted by the Inca ruler Huayna Capac. The classification of Pachakamak in <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religious studies<\/span> as a <em>Pan-Andean oracle sanctuary<\/em> was systematically undertaken by Maria Rostworowski in her standard work <em>Pachacamac y el Senor de los Milagros<\/em> (1992).<\/p><p>Pachakamak stands in a complex <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic study of God and the doctrines of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theological<\/span> entanglement with <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/viracocha-creator-god-of-the-andes\/\">Viracocha<\/a>: in some sources the two are equated, in others described as related, for example as father and son or as a dual aspect of a higher being.<\/p><p>This entanglement reflects the fact that the Inca had to integrate the older coastal <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The scholarly doctrine of God and the beliefs of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theology<\/span> of Pachakamak into their own highland <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The scholarly doctrine of God and the beliefs of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theology<\/span> without fully dissolving it.<\/p><p>The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religion<\/span> of the Lima region had its own identity before the Inca conquest, in which Pachakamak was not the only but the most powerful supreme deity. Alongside him, local huaca <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sacred place dedicated to the veneration of a deity.\" tabindex=\"0\">sanctuaries<\/span> and pre-Inca deities such as <em>Vichama<\/em>, a son-avatar of Pachakamak, were venerated.<\/p><p>The conquest of the region by the Inca Tupac Yupanqui (ca. 1470) proceeded cautiously: unlike in other provinces, the local chief deity was not replaced by Inti; instead, a dual-theological solution was found in which Inti <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure serving the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temples<\/span> were erected alongside the Pachakamak <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure serving the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-pachakamak-s1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-pachakamak-s1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-pachakamak-s1h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-pachakamak-s1h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Name and Etymology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-pachakamak-s1c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-pachakamak-s1c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-pachakamak-s1t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-pachakamak-s1t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The name <em>Pacha Kamaq<\/em> is a Quechua construction from <em>pacha<\/em> (world, time, space, as in <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/pachamama-earth-mother-of-the-andes\/\">Pachamama<\/a>) and <em>kamaq<\/em> (animater, preserver, bringer-forth). Diego Gonzalez Holguin translates <em>kamaq<\/em> in his <em>Vocabulario<\/em> (1608) as <em>el criador<\/em>, the creator. Thus, Pacha Kamaq is structurally the <em>World-Animater<\/em>.<\/p><p>Noteworthy is the close linguistic proximity to <em>kamay<\/em>, the Quechua term for the animating energy that gives a thing its specific form.<\/p><p>The Peruvian anthropologist Gerald Taylor has shown in his works on Quechua <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic study of God and the beliefs of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theology<\/span> (1974, 2001) that <em>kamay<\/em> does not mean a substantial creation in the Judeo-Christian sense, but rather a continuous act of informing, the ongoing animation of the world by a numinous force.<\/p><p>Pacha Kamaq is therefore not a one-time creator like the biblical God, but a permanent world-animater.<\/p><p>The Pachacamac region on the Peruvian Pacific coast took its name from the god. The Spanish name for the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sacred site dedicated to the veneration of a deity.\" tabindex=\"0\">sanctuary<\/span> was <em>Pachacama<\/em> or <em>Pachacamac<\/em>, depending on the chronicle.<\/p><p>In the local language of the Ychsma (an Aymaran substrate dialect of the Lima region), a separate designation may have been in use that has not been preserved.<\/p><p>A theologically particularly illuminating etymology was proposed by Marco Curatola in <em>Adivinacion y oraculos en el mundo andino antiguo<\/em> (2008): <em>Pacha Kamaq<\/em> as <em>World-Compressor<\/em> or <em>World-Connector<\/em>, drawing on the derived meanings of <em>kamay<\/em> as <em>to give something form<\/em>, <em>to condense<\/em>, <em>to compress<\/em>.<\/p><p>In this reading, Pachakamak would be the force that gives the world its concrete shape and holds it together, an interpretation that corresponds to the modern discussion of <em>kamay<\/em> as an Andean concept of energy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-pachakamak-s2 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-pachakamak-s2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-pachakamak-s2h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-pachakamak-s2h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Description and Iconography<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-pachakamak-s2c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-pachakamak-s2c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-pachakamak-s2t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-pachakamak-s2t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The most important surviving <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An image of a deity venerated in a temple or shrine.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult image<\/span> is the famous wooden double-figure <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An image or statue venerated as divine.\" tabindex=\"0\">idol<\/span> of Pachacamac, which was excavated in 1938 from beneath the floor of the upper temple area and is today housed in the Museo de Sitio of Pachacamac.<\/p><p>It is an approximately 2.30 m tall carved wooden stele with two opposing faces in the upper third and a row of stylized anthropomorphic figures on the shaft. The double face has repeatedly given rise to speculation that Pachakamak was a Janus-like <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> facing in two directions.<\/p><p>The archaeological dating of the wooden stele is disputed. Calancha was an Augustinian friar who wrote with the aim of documenting the history of the missions; his rendering of Andean myths is shaped by Christian interpretive patterns, such as the search for parallels with biblical creation and Fall narratives.<\/p><p>It is not always possible to determine how much of a transmitted version represents pre-colonial tradition and how much the chroniclers added through harmonization or comparison.<\/p><p>There is also a linguistic problem. The name <em>Pachakamak<\/em>, often interpreted as the one who animates or orders the world, resembles a theological term that Christian missionaries deliberately seized upon in order to find a native expression for the Christian God. The colonial missionary literature thereby loaded the name with additional meaning.<\/p><p>Contemporary research, such as the work of Sabine MacCormack on the colonial perception of Andean religion, therefore cautions against reading the creation narratives uncritically as pure pre-colonial heritage, but rather as texts that arose at the intersection of indigenous <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\"
