numerous epithets: <em>Apu Qun Tiqsi Wiraqucha<\/em>, <em>Pachayachachiq<\/em> (Teacher of the World), <em>Illa Tiqsi Wiraqucha<\/em> (Wiraqucha of the Light-Ground).<\/p><p>These aspect-names should, following Pierre Duviols&#8217;s observation, be read as evidence of a genuinely Andean, philosophically speculative <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic study of God and the beliefs of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theology<\/span> that was operative beneath the surface of the personal-god-style high <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of religious acts of veneration for a deity or sacred figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult<\/span>.<\/p><p>The early chronicles (Cieza de Leon, Sarmiento de Gamboa, Cristobal de Molina) present Viracocha as the supreme being above all other deities. Garcilaso de la Vega, writing later and more closely oriented toward the Inca-period elevation of Inti, describes the relationship in more complex terms: Inti is the visible ruler, Viracocha the invisible creator.<\/p><p>From a religious-studies perspective, a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic study of God and the doctrines of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theological<\/span> layering is discernible here, in which an older creator-god belief and a younger imperial solar <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic study of God and the beliefs of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theology<\/span> coexist.<\/p><p>Notably, Viracocha was known in the Aymara-speaking region as <em>Tunupa<\/em> or <em>Tonopa<\/em>, a figure with its own mythological narratives, studied in depth by the religious ethnologist Therese Bouysse-Cassagne in <em>Lluvias y cenizas<\/em> (1988).<\/p><p>Among the Aymara, Tunupa is less clearly a creator than the Inca Viracocha; he also displays trickster-like traits and is closely linked to the region&#8217;s volcanism.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-viracocha-s1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-viracocha-s1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-viracocha-s1h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-viracocha-s1h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Name and Etymology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-viracocha-s1c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-viracocha-s1c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-viracocha-s1t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-viracocha-s1t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The etymology of the name <em>Wiraqucha<\/em> has long been contested. Garcilaso de la Vega derives it from <em>wira<\/em> (fat, cream) and <em>qucha<\/em> (lake), translating it as <em>fat of the lake<\/em> or <em>foam on the water<\/em>. This etymology fits well with the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A traditional narrative about gods, origins, and the order of the world.\" tabindex=\"0\">myth<\/span> of the water-creator from Titicaca, but is not linguistically conclusive.<\/p><p>An alternative reading connects the first syllable to <em>wila<\/em> (Aymara: blood), yielding <em>blood of the lake<\/em> or the notion of a reddish, volcanic water.<\/p><p>Cesar Itier, in his linguistic studies (2008, 2013), has pointed to a possible third reading in which <em>wira<\/em> may derive from an archaic root <em>wir-<\/em> meaning <em>radiance<\/em> or <em>glow of light<\/em>, which would make Wiraqucha the <em>radiance of the lake<\/em>.<\/p><p>In colonial usage, <em>wiraqucha<\/em> was quickly adopted as a form of address for Spaniards, initially because the Inca regarded the bearded conquerors as manifestations of the bearded creator god, and subsequently as a general honorific that survives to this day in some Quechua-speaking regions with the meaning of <em>lord<\/em> or <em>senor<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-viracocha-s2 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-viracocha-s2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-viracocha-s2h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-viracocha-s2h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Appearance and Iconography<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-viracocha-s2c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-viracocha-s2c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-viracocha-s2t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-viracocha-s2t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Viracocha is described in the sources with unusual frequency as a bearded old man who wanders the Andes wearing a long cloak, carrying a staff, and wearing a solar crown.<\/p><p>This description departs from the typical indigenous <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The study of pictorial content and its meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">iconography<\/span> of the Andes, in which bearded men are virtually unknown, and has given rise to earlier speculation that Viracocha might be a historical echo of a pre-Columbian visitor from Eurasia. Modern scholarship has rejected this speculation.<\/p><p>The principal iconographic source is the famous <em>Sun Gate of Tiwanaku<\/em> (c. 600 to 1000 CE), at the center of which a central figure appears with a radiate crown and symmetrically outstretched arms, in which it holds two staffs (often interpreted as spear-throwers).<\/p><p>This so-called <em>Staff God<\/em> figure is regularly identified in the archaeological literature with Viracocha, although the emic designation used by Tiwanaku culture for this figure has not been transmitted. Karen Wise and John Janusek have repeatedly urged caution in this identification in their Tiwanaku research.<\/p><p>Also widespread is the connection of Viracocha with the Inca capital Cusco and its central <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure dedicated to the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span>, the Coricancha. Viracocha appears on the <em>Isla del Sol<\/em> in Lake Titicaca and first creates a primordial humanity from stone, which he then destroys in a great flood on account of their disobedience.<\/p><p>According to Cristobal de Molina, he subsequently shapes a second humanity from clay at <em>Tiwanaku<\/em>, assigns each people its language, dress, and homeland, and sends them forth to journey through the Andes.<\/p><p>Viracocha himself then wanders northward through the Andes, teaching humanity agriculture, weaving, and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religion<\/span>, and finally departs from the world at the Pacific coast by striding across the water and disappearing in a westward direction.<\/p><p>This concluding episode was interpreted by some Inca theologians to mean that Viracocha would one day return from the west, a messianic expectation that was briefly projected onto the Conquistadors in the early years of the Spanish conquest, which partly explains the rapid military defeat of the Inca Empire.<\/p><p>The son of Viracocha appears in some sources as <em>Imaymana Viracocha<\/em> or as <em>Tocapo Viracocha<\/em>, figures who travel through the Andes as brothers or companions of the creator, establishing cosmic order.<\/p><p>This triad of the three Wiraquchas reminded the Spanish chroniclers of the Christian Trinity, giving rise to discussions of a possible <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Originating from the period before the spread of Christianity.\" tabindex=\"0\">pre-Christian<\/span> Andean mission, which is not historically documentable.<\/p><p>A particularly important source is the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A traditional narrative about gods, origins, and the order of the world.\" tabindex=\"0\">myth<\/span> of the <em>Cacha Volcano<\/em>, transmitted by Cieza de Leon (1553): according to it, Viracocha came to Cacha, where the inhabitants refused to believe him because of his strange appearance and attacked him.<\/p><p>The creator thereupon caused fire to fall from the sky and burned the land until the Cacha inhabitants recognized their guilt and implored his forgiveness.<\/p><p>The archaeological evidence of a volcanic lava field near Raqchi\/Cacha has given the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A traditional narrative about gods, origins, and the order of the world.\" tabindex=\"0\">myth<\/span> an explicable geological reference. They were kept in the lower layers of wall coverings or beneath the hearth and were sprinkled with llama fat and chicha on feast days.<\/p><p>From a religious-studies perspective, it is significant that this conopa practice was not conceived as magically compulsive, but as the cultivation of a relationship with the creative world-substance that was alive in the house, the field, and the flock.<\/p><p>The iWell Guard context describes this practice as a historical phenomenon, not as a recommended course of action.<\/p><p>In the contemporary folk-religious practice of Peruvian and Bolivian highland communities, conopa stone figurines continue in use in many cases under the new name <em>illa<\/em>.<\/p><p>They are used especially by herders, who keep small stone llamas or carved alpaca figurines under the doorstep or in the bedroom to safeguard the health of the flock. In all these cases we encounter a creator who rests withdrawn in the sky while everyday religious practice is directed toward younger, more accessible deities.<\/p><p>Within the Andes, Viracocha is closely related to the coastal god Pachakamak; in some chronicles the two are described as father and son or as brothers.<\/p><p>Mary Eyzaguirre examined the theological interrelation of the two high gods in depth in her work on the Pachakamak <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of religious acts of veneration directed toward a deity or sacred figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult<\/span> (2003).
