alongside the creator god <a href=\"\/en\/viracocha-creator-god-of-the-andes\/\">Viracocha<\/a> and the moon goddess <a href=\"\/en\/mama-killa-moon-goddess-of-the-inca\/\">Mama Killa<\/a>.<\/p><p>The Peruvian chronicler Garcilaso de la Vega describes him in his <em>Comentarios Reales de los Incas<\/em> (1609) as the visible face of the supreme being, who legitimized the Inca rulers and organized the empire economically as well as calendrically.<\/p><p>In terms of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religious studies<\/span>, Inti belongs to the group of dynastic solar theologies, as known in comparable form from the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Epoch of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BC to 600 AD.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancient<\/span> Egyptian Re <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of religious acts of veneration for a deity or sacred figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult<\/span>, the Japanese Amaterasu <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of religious acts of veneration for a deity or sacred figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult<\/span>, or the Near Eastern solar cults.<\/p><p><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Romanian scholar of religion (1907-1986); shaped the phenomenological method in religious studies.\" tabindex=\"0\">Mircea Eliade<\/span> describes in his <em>History of Religious Ideas<\/em> the tendency of later high civilizations to elevate a solar deity to the guarantor of political order; Inti fits into this pattern.<\/p><p>The Inca rulers bore the title <em>Intip Churin<\/em> (Son of the Sun) and derived from it their universal claim to rule over the Andean highlands and the <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/andean-cultures-and-the-inca-inti-pachamama-and-viracocha\/\">Andes \/ Inca<\/a> world.<\/p><p>Notably, Inti had no comparably prominent position in the pre-Inca high cultures of the Andes (Chavin, Moche, Tiwanaku, Wari). Only the state-building <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The scholarly study of God and the beliefs of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theology<\/span> of the Inca Empire placed him at the top of the visible pantheon.<\/p><p>Catherine Allen notes in <em>The Hold Life Has<\/em> (2002) that the veneration of the earth mother <a href=\"\/en\/pachamama-earth-mother-of-the-andes\/\">Pachamama<\/a> and the local mountain <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span> Apu remains practically more important in many communities today than the higher solar theology of Inti, an indication that Inti functioned primarily as an imperial <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> and that the concrete daily life of Andean religiosity was shaped more by the earth mother and the local mountain lords.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-inti-s1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-inti-s1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-inti-s1h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-inti-s1h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Name and Etymology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-inti-s1c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-inti-s1c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-inti-s1t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-inti-s1t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The name <em>Inti<\/em> has been attested since the earliest colonial Quechua dictionaries (Domingo de Santo Thomas 1560, Diego Gonzalez Holguin 1608) as a generic term for the sun as a celestial body as well as for the personified <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span>.<\/p><p>This dual meaning, physical celestial body and divine person, is typical of Andean religious thought, in which the separation between the natural and numinous planes is less sharply drawn than in European theologies.<\/p><p>Inti appears in the sources under several aspect names: <em>Apu Inti<\/em> (Lord Sun), <em>Churi Inti<\/em> (Son Sun), <em>Wayna Inti<\/em> (Young Sun), and <em>Inti Illapa<\/em> (Thunder Sun) each designate different manifestations, which the chronicler Juan de Betanzos describes in his <em>Suma y narracion de los Incas<\/em> (1551) as three persons of a triadic solar theology.<\/p><p>This triad has prompted caution from religious ethnologists such as Pierre Duviols: the Christian doctrine of the Trinity of the Spanish chroniclers may here be overlaying a genuine indigenous multiplicity of forms.<\/p><p>The highest festival name <em>Inti Raymi<\/em> is a Quechua compound of <em>inti<\/em> and <em>raymi<\/em> (festival, festival assembly). It designates the winter solstice festival of the Southern Hemisphere (June) and has been annually re-staged in Cusco since 1944 as a reconstructed folk festival, albeit without the historical practice of animal <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An offering to a deity to express thanks, request, or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacrifice<\/span>.<\/p><p>The festival name has furthermore established itself as the designation for a distinct Andean calendar system in which years are counted from the mythical beginning of the empire.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-inti-s2 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgw-inti-s2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-inti-s2h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgw-inti-s2h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Description and Iconography<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-inti-s2c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iwgw-inti-s2c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgw-inti-s2t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgw-inti-s2t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The iconographic depiction of Inti is only fragmentarily accessible in pre-Hispanic sources, since the Inca Empire did not have a written pictorial <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span> in the strict sense.<\/p><p>The primary source is the colonial-era secondary tradition as well as the famous gold sheet that is said to have been displayed in the sun <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> <em>Coricancha<\/em> in Cusco: a round disc framed by rays with an anthropomorphic face, the so-called <em>Punchao<\/em>.<\/p><p>This <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Pictorial representation of a deity venerated in a temple or shrine.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult image<\/span> was confiscated by the Spanish at the conquest of Vilcabamba in 1572 and shipped to Spain, but has been lost ever since.<\/p><p>Garcilaso de la Vega describes the Coricancha <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A sacred site dedicated to the veneration of a deity.\" tabindex=\"0\">sanctuary<\/span> as an interior completely clad in gold plates. At the center stood the Punchao, flanked by the mummified bodies of the deceased Inca rulers (<em>mallqui<\/em>), who were regarded as eternally living embodiments of the Inti lineage.<\/p><p>The Spanish chroniclers Polo de Ondegardo and Cristobal de Albornoz confirm this arrangement in their inspection reports of the 1560s. According to Cristobal de Molina (<em>Relacion de las fabulas y ritos de los Incas<\/em>, 1575), Viracocha creates the sun, the moon, and the stars at Titicaca and commands them to take their courses in the sky.<\/p><p>Inti here is a secondary creation of the higher creative principle. The surviving architecture allows conclusions about the arrangement of the rooms, even though the precise function of individual areas remains disputed.<\/p><p>One topic of discussion is that the <em>Coricancha<\/em> housed not only the sun but also several deities and the embalmed bodies of deceased rulers.<\/p><p>The astronomer and anthropologist R. T. Zuidema has argued in a series of works that from the <em>Coricancha<\/em> radiated a system of imaginary lines, the so-called <em>ceque<\/em>, along which numerous sanctuaries lay in the vicinity of Cusco. These lines are said to have had both ritual and calendrical functions.<\/p><p>The thesis is influential but not uncontested, because it rests predominantly on the list of sanctuaries in Bernabe Cobo and the interpretation of that list remains disputed.
