The first three rounds belong to the people; the fourth belongs to Bannik.<\/p><p>Anyone who enters the bathhouse at that time risks <strong>scalding, suffocation, or death from hot steam<\/strong>. Protective practice: leave water and food <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An offering to a deity to express gratitude, petition, or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">offerings<\/span> (bread, salt, honey) on the bench, avoid making the sign of the cross (it angers him), and never speak loudly.<\/p><p>The <strong>banya birth ritual tradition<\/strong> (especially in northern Russia and the Tver region) presents newborns to Bannik for their first cleansing as an act of acknowledgment. He can help the bather, warn them, or scalp them and pull them into the steam, depending on how he is treated.<\/p><p>Unlike malevolent <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A spiritual being to which harmful or ambivalent effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">demons<\/span>, Bannik is not an inherently harmful being but a household <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> with clear rules: those who are polite and observe etiquette are rewarded; those who disrespect or defile him are punished.
