Ofuda is a protective talisman from the religious world of Japan<\/a>. It is a strip of paper or a narrow little board of wood that is issued at a shrine<\/span>.<\/p>

The actual place of the Ofuda in the house is the home altar. In Japanese this altar<\/span> is called kamidana, which means roughly the shelf or the shrine<\/span> of the deities.<\/p>

The kamidana is a small, often shrine-like structure that is mounted high up on a wall. It is the domestic center of the veneration of the kami<\/span>.<\/p>

In this domestic shrine<\/span> the Ofuda finds its place. It is set or laid inside, so that the script with the name of the deity<\/span> is visible or at least present.<\/p>

Before the kamidana, and thus before the Ofuda, small offerings<\/span> are presented. Common ones are rice, water, and salt, and occasionally further foods. In this way the deity<\/span> whose presence the Ofuda conveys is honored.<\/p>

An Ofuda is not kept forever. Part of Japanese protective practice is the regular changing of the Ofuda, which usually takes place over the course of a year.<\/p>

Customarily the Ofuda is renewed at the turn of the year. The old Ofuda is given back, and a new one is fetched from the shrine<\/span> and placed on the home altar.<\/p>

The idea behind this is the notion of a power that wears out. Over the course of the year the Ofuda is regarded as increasingly depleted, used up as it were. A new Ofuda brings fresh, undiminished protective power.<\/p>

Closely connected with this is the idea of purity. In Shinto<\/span>, purity holds a high rank. Over the course of time the Ofuda takes the misfortune into itself, as it were, and the change renews the purity.<\/p>

The old Ofuda is not simply thrown away. It is brought back to the shrine<\/span>, where it is treated in a venerable manner and frequently burned in a ritual<\/span> fire.<\/p>

The Ofuda stands in close connection with the Omamori. Both are Japanese protective talismans<\/span> issued at shrines and temples<\/span>, and both go back to the same basic idea.<\/p>

For many people the Ofuda today is less an expression of a strictly thought-out faith than a part of a cultivated tradition<\/span>. Renewing the Ofuda belongs to the turn of the year like other customs<\/span> of the New Year season.<\/p>

The shrines issue Ofuda in great numbers, especially in the days around the new year. The visit to the shrine<\/span> and the fetching of a new Ofuda is a widespread custom<\/span> of this time.<\/p>
