His spear counts among the four treasures of the Tuatha D\u00e9 Danann and stands for inevitable victory; his cast against the eye of Balor decides the Battle of Mag Tuired. The festival was thus originally a commemorative and assembly festival.<\/p><p>Lugnasad fell in the time of the beginning grain harvest and was associated with assemblies, contests, markets and legal gatherings. Such seasonally bound great assemblies had an important social and political function in Irish society.<\/p><p>That a god was regarded as the founder of such a festival shows how closely mythic narrative and lived social order were bound together in the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The transmission of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>.<\/p><p>The name Lugh has, moreover, left traces in the European landscape. A number of place names formed with the element Lug- are associated in scholarship with a god corresponding to the Irish Lugh and to the hero known in Welsh as Lleu.<\/p><p>The best-known case is the city of Lyon in France, whose <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Epoch of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BC to 600 AD.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancient<\/span> name Lugdunum is often interpreted as &#8220;fortress&#8221; or &#8220;hill of Lugus,&#8221; even though the precise explanation of the first part of the name is debated in scholarship.<\/p><p>Such names suggest that a related <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> was worshipped not only in Ireland but in the wider Celtic region.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cpcc3173c e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cpcc3173c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cp3c06964 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cp3c06964\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Lleu Llaw Gyffes: The Welsh Relative<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cpdca373e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"cpdca373e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cpe868a3a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cpe868a3a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In the Welsh narrative material Lugh has a counterpart in the figure of Lleu Llaw Gyffes, whose story is told in the fourth branch of the <em>Mabinogi<\/em>, a collection of medieval Welsh tales.<\/p><p>Lleu is born under unusual circumstances and laid by his mother Arianrhod under three dooms: he is to receive no name, bear no weapons and take no wife of an earthly lineage.<\/p><p>The magician Gwydion outwits each of these dooms, gives Lleu a name through a ruse, procures weapons for him and, together with another magician, creates for him a wife made of flowers, Blodeuwedd.<\/p><p>The story takes a dark turn when Blodeuwedd turns to another man and, with his help, nearly kills Lleu.<\/p><p>Lleu can be wounded only under very particular conditions, and when these conditions are brought about by cunning, he is struck, transforms into an eagle and escapes gravely wounded. Gwydion finally finds him, restores his form and helps him to take his revenge.<\/p><p>Scholarship has long debated the relationship between Lugh and Lleu. The names are related in terms of linguistic history, and both figures share features such as the unusual birth and the connection with special conditions of their life and death.<\/p><p>At the same time the narratives are very different, and it would be mistaken to read Lleu simply as a Welsh version of the Irish Lugh.<\/p><p>It is more probable that both go back to a common older figure that took its own course in Ireland and in Wales respectively.
