The middle and ring fingers are placed into the palm, and the thumb holds them down. In this way the hand forms two rising points.

These two points are the horns that give the gesture its name. The hand forms a small, horned sign that is clear and recognizable from a distance.

The direction of the gesture matters. To ward off harm, the horned hand is often held with the points downward or toward the suspected source of danger. The sign thereby points at the misfortune.

As an amulet, this exact hand position is reproduced. Both forms belong together and complement each other.

As a gesture, the mano cornuta is a means of the moment. It is made when a danger is perceived, for instance on encountering a person regarded as bringing misfortune or during a threatening encounter.

In this form the gesture is an immediate response. The shaped horned hand accompanies its wearer without interruption, without the wearer having to do anything.

Both forms rest on the same sign and the same operating principle. Whether the hand makes the gesture or an amulet holds the gesture fast, in both cases the horned hand is the protective image.

The mano cornuta is thus a good example of how a gesture can become an object. The extended fingers form two horns, and this motif is old and many-layered in the Mediterranean region.

The horn has long been regarded as a sign of strength and fertility. It was the emblem of the strength of the animal from which it came, and was associated with a defensive life force.

This association explains the averting sense of the horn motif. A horn-like form, whether made from animal horn, from shaped metal or formed from the hand, was regarded as powerful and as suited to warding off misfortune.

The mano cornuta thus stands in a line with the horn-shaped amulet, the cornicello. On the page about the cornicello, the horn motif and its origin are presented in greater detail.

While the cornicello is a single shaped horn, the mano cornuta forms the horn with the fingers of the hand. The motif is the same; only the representation differs.

The mano cornuta thereby combines two old protective motifs, the horn and the hand. A point is regarded as averting in folkloric notion. It draws the harmful glance to itself and diverts it away from the protected person.

Added to this is the power of the horn motif. The horned hand carries within it the old notion of the strength and defensiveness of the horn and places this power at the service of protection.

The hand itself is also essential. The human hand is an old and powerful protective sign. It stands for action, for defense and for blessing, as is presented in detail in connection with the Hamsa.

The mano cornuta thus combines two operating principles. It wards off through the averting point, and it protects through the power attributed to the hand and the horn.

It is therefore neither a frightening image nor a mirror, but a sign that works through the powerful combination of hand and horn. Both rest on the horn motif. The cornicello reproduces a single horn; the mano cornuta forms the horn with the fingers.

Equally related is the fig hand, the mano fico, a fist with the thumb thrust through. It too is a hand gesture and an amulet for warding off the malocchio. Mano cornuta and mano fico form a pair of hand gestures.

Beyond Italy, the mano cornuta can be compared with the Hamsa, the hand amulet of the Mediterranean region. The Hamsa too is a hand directed against the evil eye.

The mano cornuta is to be distinguished from a modern hand gesture that looks outwardly similar but is used in an entirely different context. When someone met a person from whom misfortune was feared, or a threatening situation, they discreetly made the horned hand.

The gesture was often performed covertly, for instance behind the back or in the pocket. In this way the person could protect themselves without openly insulting the other.

As an amulet, the mano cornuta was worn and also given as a gift. It accompanied especially people regarded as at risk, and like the cornicello was mounted in houses and vehicles.

The mano cornuta was often used together with other means of protection. Whoever wore a cornicello could at the same time make the gesture of the mano cornuta. The various means reinforced one another.

The mano cornuta is thus not merely a single sign, but part of a living custom.
