The protection of the door and the threshold is a widespread idea.

The threshold of a house is regarded in many cultures as an exposed place. It is the boundary between the protected interior and the unprotected outer world.

For this reason numerous traditions know protective signs and protective figures that are placed at the door. He is not a mere sign, but the making present of a figure with whom a relationship is maintained.

Eleggua is thus the form the threshold guardian takes in Santería. A making present, by contrast, renders the figure present at the place, so that a relationship with it becomes possible.

In the Eleggua head Eleggua becomes present. The head is the place at which the relationship between the household and the orisha is maintained.

This presence is established through the making. The enclosed components, the cowrie shells and the accompanying acts turn the cement form into the making present of Eleggua.

From this understanding follows also the care of the head. Because Eleggua is present in it, the head is not treated like a mere object, but is given attention.

The Eleggua head thus shows an understanding that is widespread in the Afro-Caribbean religions. An object is not only an image, but a place of the presence of a venerated figure.

Present-Day Reception

Santería is today a living religion. It is practiced in Cuba, in the United States and in further countries by numerous people.

Eleggua is one of the orishas that play an important role in today’s Santería. The Eleggua head at the house entrance is widespread in the households of the adherents.

In the public perception Santería, often under the name Voodoo, is frequently portrayed as a subject of horror. This portrayal does not do the religion justice.

A factual consideration recognizes Santería for what it is, a grown religion with West African roots, with an order of its own and with venerated figures.

Eleggua is, within this religion, the guardian of the thresholds.
