descending directly from Chaos and being a primordial force, not generated by other gods. She is older than Zeus himself and is even feared by him.<\/p><p>Her genealogy is immense: alone, without a male partner, she bore the children of darkness, Erebus (darkness), Thanatos (death), Hypnos (sleep), Eris (strife), Nemesis (retribution) and many others.<\/p><p>These children embody all the negative and necessary aspects of existence. She embodies the necessary darkness without which there is no life.<\/p><h3>Appearance and Symbolism<\/h3><p>Nyx is depicted as a dignified, majestic woman, often in dark robes, with stars in her hair or surrounding her figure. Sometimes she wears a crescent moon or is drawn by dark horses or owls, animals of the night. The star and the moon are her attributes, as are poppy and black <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An offering to a deity to express thanks, petition or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacrificial<\/span> birds.<\/p><p>Her color is the deepest black, not the color of evil but of the unknown. In contrast to male gods, Nyx is portrayed as androgynous or feminine and powerful, not sexualized but commanding respect. It is clear, however, that several Orphic cosmogonies place Nyx at the beginning or close to the beginning of the world&#8217;s creation.<\/p><p>In some Orphic versions Nyx is a prophetic power and a kind of primal mother who holds an oracular seat and even gives counsel to the later king of the gods.<\/p><p>In certain accounts Zeus receives his plan of rule by consulting Nyx. Thus Nyx here is no longer merely the ancestress of the dark powers but a knowing, advising entity at the root of the cosmic order.<\/p><p>One Orphic hymn is expressly addressed to Nyx and praises her as the mother of gods and men, as the origin of all things. The Orphic Hymns, a collection of cultic invocations probably of the imperial period, show that Nyx was indeed <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The petitioning or invoking address to a deity or power.\" tabindex=\"0\">invoked<\/span> in this religious milieu, unlike in the widespread civic cult.<\/p><p>Scholarship, such as the work of Martin L. West on the Orphic poems, has demonstrated that the Orphic elevation of night to a creative power is an independent theological achievement and not simply a variant of Hesiod.<\/p><p>It stands within a larger context of ancient Near Eastern and other cosmogonies in which darkness stands at the beginning.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cp27eec3f e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cp27eec3f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cpfcf4ea9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cpfcf4ea9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Cult and Visual Art: the Rare Traces of Night<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cp372c26c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"cp372c26c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cpc77a788 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cpc77a788\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Unlike the Olympian gods, Nyx possessed scarcely any pronounced public <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of religious acts of veneration for a deity or sacred figure.\" tabindex=\"0\">cult<\/span>. The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Epoch of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BCE to 600 CE.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancient<\/span> travel writer Pausanias mentions in the 2nd century only isolated references, for instance an <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A site or institution at which a divine pronouncement is sought.\" tabindex=\"0\">oracle<\/span> of Nyx near Megara.<\/p><p>A widespread <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temple<\/span> cult with its own festivals, priesthoods and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An offering to a deity to express gratitude, petition, or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacrifices<\/span>, such as Athena or Apollo had, is not attested for Nyx. She belongs to those cosmic personifications that were theologically and poetically important but scarcely venerated institutionally.<\/p><p>In visual art Nyx is rare but not unknown. On some vase paintings she appears as a female figure, often in connection with the depiction of day and night or with her children Hypnos and Thanatos.<\/p><p>A well-known <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A recurring element of content in art or narrative.\" tabindex=\"0\">motif<\/span> is Nyx as charioteer, who travels across the sky with her team and brings on the night, while Hemera or Eos brings the day. These depictions, however, are not always clearly distinguishable from related figures such as Selene, the moon goddess, which complicates iconographic research.<\/p><p>Famous is the depiction of Night on the so-called Pergamon <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An elevated place or table for offerings and religious acts.\" tabindex=\"0\">Altar<\/span> of the 2nd century before our era, where Nyx appears as a combatant in the Gigantomachy and hurls a vessel containing a serpent. On the whole, however, the evidence remains thin.<\/p><p>Nyx is a good example of the fact that the importance of a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> in Greek religion is not to be measured by the number of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temples<\/span> and images alone.
