They are water and earth spirits, guardians of springs, lakes, rivers, wetlands and certain soils.<\/p><p>In their ambivalence they stand between danger and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The conferring of well-being and protection, often in a fixed verbal form.\" tabindex=\"0\">blessing<\/span>: those who respect the Lu gain prosperity, health and fertility; those who disturb their spaces, through pollution, improper digging or the felling of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to the divine and thereby withdrawn from everyday use.\" tabindex=\"0\">sacred<\/span> trees, bring illness and misfortune upon themselves.<\/p><p>Iconographically and in terms of religious history, the Lu are closely related to the Indian <em>n\u0101ga<\/em>. In the Buddhist subjugation under <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Legendary Indian tantric master (8th c.); transmitted Buddhism to Tibet.\" tabindex=\"0\">Padmasambhava<\/span>, many Lu became dharmapalas (protective spirits); others remained active as local, sometimes dangerous forces.<\/p><div><h3>Adaptation from the Indian Naga Tradition<\/h3><p>The <em>Lu<\/em> of Tibet are directly derived from the Indian Naga tradition, yet were localized in a specific context. While the Indian Naga is a king serpent with <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special actions or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magical<\/span> powers who lives in subterranean <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">temples<\/span>, the Lu of Tibet is more of a water <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> or a water king with a more fluid nature.<\/p><p>The transformation shows how religious concepts are reshaped by climate and geography: the Indian Naga, at home in a tropical, rain-rich culture, becomes the Lu, who exists in the icy highland rivers of Tibet.<\/p><p>The retained features are water dwelling, control of wealth and a tendency toward anger when injured. Pre-Buddhist Bon texts describe them as one of the three main categories of beings (alongside lha and btsan).<\/p><p>With the introduction of Buddhism in the 7th century, the Tibetan conception of the Lu merges with the Indian N\u0101ga tradition: the N\u0101ga become part of the Buddhist <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The totality of the gods of a religion or culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">pantheon<\/span> (for example Muchilinda, who protects the meditating Buddha from rain), and Tibetan Lu take on naga iconographic traits.<\/p><p>The traditions attribute the subjugation of numerous Lu to Padmasambhava (8th century). Disease was then interpreted as their response.<\/p><p>If a person fell ill and the symptoms, above all skin diseases, were interpreted as a <em>klu<\/em> punishment, a distinct repertoire of reconciliation rituals was brought into play.<\/p><p>This included purifying ceremonies and the presentation of especially pure, often white or milky offerings, as well as the erection or renewal of small shrines, the <em>lu khang<\/em> or <em>lu bum<\/em>, in which the <em>klu<\/em> were venerated.<\/p><p>A <em>klu bum<\/em>, a vessel with pure substances, could serve as a permanent dwelling and place of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The concrete object or food offered to a deity.\" tabindex=\"0\">offering<\/span>. This practice combined, as was usual in Tibet, pre-Buddhist, Buddhist and Bon elements.<\/p><p>Remarkable is the dual nature of the <em>klu<\/em>. They are dangerous, but also a source of wealth, fertility and prosperity. A well-treated <em>klu<\/em> dwelling place could bring thriving to a family or a place.<\/p><p>In the Buddhist stratum of the tradition, the <em>klu<\/em> additionally appear as guardians of hidden teachings, a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A recurring element of content in art or narrative.\" tabindex=\"0\">motif<\/span> that derives directly from the Indian <em>n\u0101ga<\/em> <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>, in which the <em>n\u0101ga<\/em> preserve texts until the world is ready for them.<\/p><p>The <em>klu<\/em> are thus not a simple harmful being, but an ambivalent power with which a regulated relationship, determined by purity and respect, had to be
