Literally it means &#8220;<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which effects in the world are attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span>&#8220;, but in present-day usage the spirits of the dead are foremost.<\/p><p>Gwishin are people whose souls did not find the regular path into the afterlife after death, whether because of an unresolved concern, an unatoned wrong, a missing burial or omitted <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An ancestor venerated in many cultures as a protective power.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancestral<\/span> rites (<em>jesa<\/em>).<\/p><p>The classic appearance is that of a woman in white mourning dress (<em>sobok<\/em>) with long black hair covering the face. The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A recurring thematic element in art or narrative.\" tabindex=\"0\">motif<\/span> is iconographically closely related to the Japanese Y\u016brei, but has its own Confucian-shaped background.<\/p><div><h3>Joseon-era <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The transmission of knowledge and stories across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span><\/h3><p>The written documentation of Gwishin cases accumulated during the Joseon dynasty (1392, 1897). The <em>yadam<\/em> collections (oral traditions) and <em>paesol<\/em> (anecdotes) were recorded systematically from the 15th century onward.
