The Fifth Thule Expedition under Knud Rasmussen reported in especially great detail on the religion of the Inuit. Its records from the 1920s are among the most important sources on amulets and their use.<\/p>

Scraps of fabric, beads and objects introduced after European contact could also serve as amulets. The selection was open and followed the meaning ascribed to the individual object.<\/p>

With increasing contact with whalers and traders, new objects entered amulet use. Buttons, coins and pieces of metal are found on belts of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Such finds show that the tradition was not rigid but could take up new materials.<\/p>

The number of amulets on a single belt could be considerable. Some surviving belts carry many dozens of objects. Each of them points to a meaning of its own or to a particular person.<\/p>

Inuit religion knew a multitude of spirits and powerful figures connected with animals, with the weather and with the sea. A well-known figure is the mistress of the sea animals, on whom hunting fortune depended.<\/p>

Some amulets were already given to a child and were meant to accompany it for a lifetime. In the records of the ethnologists there are reports of amulets that were linked to the name of a deceased person and the spirit<\/span> associated with that person.<\/p>

The amulet belt thus also reflected the idea that a person is woven into a network of relationships with ancestors and spirits.<\/p>

Wearers of amulets and amulet belts were men, women and children. Which amulets belonged to a person depended on their gender, their age, their tasks and their life story.<\/p>

In the ethnographic reports there are indications that individual amulets were bound to particular stages of life.
