Her ambivalence is programmatic: in her early Indian form she appears as a dangerous female being at cremation grounds, hungry, wrathful, and possessed of occult knowledge.<\/p><p>In the tantric adoption she becomes the bearer of the highest teachings and the key to tantric realisation, wisdom itself in a female, dynamic form.<\/p><p>Three dimensions have become established in the Tibetan tradition: the &#8220;worldly&#8221; Dakini (an encounter-figure at specific places), the &#8220;wisdom Dakini&#8221; (a transcendent form, the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"In Tibetan Buddhism, a meditation deity with whom a practitioner works through identification in order to embody aspects of enlightenment.\">yidam<\/span> of meditation), and the &#8220;secret Dakini&#8221; (the inner energy of the practitioner).<\/p><p>The boundary with the &#8220;demonic&#8221; is fluid: a Dakini can be terrifying before she is recognised as a teacher. It is precisely this ambivalence that makes her classification within a demonology meaningful; she represents a force that is threatening in the unrealised state and awakening in the understood state.<\/p><div><p><strong>Hindu Dakini and the Wild Goddesses<\/strong><\/p><p>The <em>Dakini<\/em> figure has its origins in <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Epoch of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BC to 600 AD.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancient<\/span> Indian Hindu texts, where she appears as a demonic or wild goddess, often associated with the consumption of flesh and impure sacrificial rites.<\/p><p>In early Puranic texts such as the <em>Markandeya Purana<\/em>, dakinis are described as attendants of Kali or as independent wild-feminine powers wandering at slaughterplaces and cremation grounds.<\/p><p>These Hindu dakinis are originally related to <em>bhuta<\/em> (<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span>) but are elevated through repeated textual categorisation into autonomous supernatural classes. The etymology of <em>dakini<\/em> is disputed, possibly deriving from <em>daka<\/em> (<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special actions or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magical<\/span> practitioner).<\/p><p>In Hindu <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An ordered sequence of symbolic actions with religious or cultural meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritual<\/span> texts, dakinis are conceptualised as guardians and intermediaries between the divine and human spheres. They belong to the sphere of dangerous powers located at the margins of the ordered world.<\/p><p>With the rise of the tantric currents in Buddhism, from approximately the 7th and 8th century onward, a reinterpretation took place. The <em>\u1e0d\u0101kin\u012b<\/em> was integrated into the tantric system and became there an embodiment of awakened consciousness.<\/p><p>In Tibetan the term is rendered as <em>khandroma<\/em> (<em>mkha&#8217; &#8216;gro ma<\/em>), literally &#8220;she who walks in space&#8221; or &#8220;sky-goer&#8221;. This translation reframes the figure in spiritual terms: the space through which she moves is emptiness, the central concept of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Great Vehicle; one of the three main traditions of Buddhism, with the bodhisattva ideal.\" tabindex=\"0\">Mahayana<\/span> philosophy.<\/p><p>Scholarship, including the work of Judith Simmer-Brown, has emphasised that this transformation was not a mere forgetting of the older meaning.
