in Buddhist <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The conception of the structure and order of the world within a given culture.\" tabindex=\"0\">cosmology<\/span>. A hungry ghost with a distended belly and a needle-thin throat, capable of seeing and desiring, yet unable to eat or drink.<\/p><p>The figure has become an image for the consequences of karmic greed: those who in life refused to give, were miserly, or withheld alms are reborn as pretas and suffer the corresponding deprivation.<\/p><p>In the Petavatthu texts (part of the Pali <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The collection of sacred scriptures recognised as binding by a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">Canon<\/span>), Buddhist masters recount encounters with pretas confessing their former deeds. The Ullambana <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In Hinduism and Buddhism, a doctrinal text in concise form.\" tabindex=\"0\">Sutra<\/span> (<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"'Great Vehicle'; one of the three main traditions of Buddhism, with the bodhisattva ideal and elaborated philosophical reflection.\">Mahayana<\/span>) recounts how Maudgalyayana sees his deceased mother in the preta state and can only save her through the collective <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An offering to a deity to express gratitude, petition, or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">offering<\/span> power of the Sangha.<\/p><p>From this narrative developed the Hungry Ghost Festival celebrated worldwide (Ullambana, Chinese Yulanpen, Japanese Obon).
