Mara is defeated. His four armies are <em>k\u0101ma<\/em> (desire), <em>arati<\/em> (discontent), <em>k\u1e63ut-pip\u0101s\u0101<\/em> (hunger and thirst), <em>t\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47\u0101<\/em> (craving). This scene is iconographically widespread worldwide and theologically central.<\/p><p>Mara is not a cosmic counter-<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A being venerated as divine within a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">deity<\/span> in the monotheistic sense. He is lord of the <em>Kamadhatu<\/em> (sense realm), a deva figure who has become an obstacle on the path through attachment and pride.<\/p><p>In an extended Buddhist interpretation there are four Maras: Skandha-Mara (aggregates), Kleshamara (defilements), Marana-Mara (death), Devaputra-Mara (the personal figure). All of them designate obstacles on the path to liberation.
