Its <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The study of pictorial content and its meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">iconography<\/span> is defined by hunger and decay: protruding ribs, thin limbs, a large mouth, smeared with blood.<\/p><p>Already in the Atharvaveda (1st millennium BCE), Pishachas appear alongside Rakshasas and Yatudhanas as a class of demonic nocturnal beings to be warded off <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Belonging to a fixed religious sequence of actions.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritually<\/span>.<\/p><p>Later tradition develops them further, in Tantric literature, in popular <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The transmission of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>, and in regional traditions of northwestern India, where a distinct language (&#8220;Paishachi&#8221;) was associated with them. Modern reception extends into Bollywood horror films, which employ Pishachas as a classic figure of terror.<\/p><div><p><strong>Pishacha in the Atharvaveda and Early <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An ordered sequence of symbolic actions with religious or cultural meaning.\" tabindex=\"0\">Ritual<\/span> Classifications<\/strong><\/p><p>The <em>Pishacha<\/em> (Sanskrit: flesh-eating <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A spiritual being to which harmful or ambivalent effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">demons<\/span>) are first explicitly categorized as a demonic class in the <em>Atharvaveda<\/em> (presumably around 1000 BCE).<\/p><p>The Atharvaveda distinguishes various demonic types according to their activities and degrees of danger; Pishacha are considered particularly dangerous because they are active at night, seek out corpses, and attack living humans. The texts document protective rituals against Pishacha attacks, including specific mantras and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An offering to a deity to express gratitude, petition, or veneration.\" tabindex=\"0\">offerings<\/span>.<\/p><p>The etymological root <em>pish-<\/em> refers to cutting or tearing, reflecting the associated violence. In the Vedic cosmological hierarchy, Pishacha stand below <em>rakshasa<\/em> (more powerful demons) but above <em>bhuta<\/em> (simple <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span>).<\/p><p>This hierarchical classification reflects not primarily moral rankings but degrees of power and controllability. The Indian grammatical tradition recognized a lower language form designated as <em>Paishachi<\/em>, meaning literally &#8220;the language of the Pishachas&#8221;.<\/p><p>It was considered the most impure and least esteemed of the Middle Indian language forms, far below Sanskrit and also below the other <em>Prakrit<\/em> languages.<\/p><p>Paishachi became famous through a work that the history of Indian literature records as a great loss: the <em>Brihatkatha<\/em> of Gunadhya, a substantial narrative collection that, according to <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The transmission of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>, was composed in Paishachi. The original work has not survived.<\/p><p>We know it only from later Sanskrit adaptations, primarily from Somadeva&#8217;s <em>Kathasaritsagara<\/em> of the 11th century and from Kshemendra&#8217;s <em>Brihatkathamanjari<\/em>. Legendary accounts of its origin surround the <em>Brihatkatha<\/em> and its supposed original version composed in the language of spirits.<\/p><p>Linguistically, it remains disputed whether Paishachi was ever a real spoken language or a literary construction, a deliberately low-marked idiom for a particular type of narrative content. Some scholars suspect behind it a real, socially stigmatized dialect of a peripheral region; others consider it an artificial category created by grammarians.<\/p><p>For the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">study of religion<\/span> as it pertains to the Pishacha, however, the finding is instructive regardless: it shows how deeply the conception of the Pishacha as the impure and the low penetrated Indian thought. Within <em>Ayurveda<\/em>, the <em>Bhutavidya<\/em>, the doctrine of spirits, forms one of the eight branches of medical knowledge.<\/p><p>The major medical compendia, above all the <em>Charaka Samhita<\/em> and the <em>Sushruta Samhita<\/em>, treat possession by various spirit beings as a recognized cause of illness and distinguish the individual spirit types according to their symptoms.<\/p><p>Possession by a Pishacha has its own clinical picture in these texts. Characteristic are uncontrolled behaviors regarded as impure: craving for inedible or impure food, residence in polluted places, disheveled appearance, incoherent speech, and an overall deteriorated condition.<\/p><p>The medical texts assign each spirit being a typical syndrome, enabling the treating physician to infer the type of spirit from the patient&#8217;s behavior.<\/p><p>The proposed treatment combined medical and ritual measures. These included purification procedures, fumigations, the recitation of protective formulas, offerings to the relevant spirit being, and behavioral prescriptions for the patient.
