In the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The era of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BCE to 600 CE.\" tabindex=\"0\">classical<\/span> <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The transmission of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>, they hang upside down in trees at cemeteries and cremation grounds (<em>shmashana<\/em>), waiting for opportunities to enter fresh corpses.<\/p><p>Literarily, the Vetala is most famous through the <em>Vetalapanchavimshati<\/em>, &#8220;Twenty-Five Tales of the Vetala&#8221;. In this cycle, King Vikramaditya is commissioned by an ascetic to fetch a Vetala from a tree.<\/p><p><span data-nosnippet>The Vetala narrates riddle stories, and Vikramaditya must solve them. The collection belongs to the Kathasaritsagara (11th century CE, Kashmir) and traveled into Persian, Arabic, and European literature. Richard F. Burton&#8217;s English translation (1870) brought the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A recurring thematic element in art or narrative.\" tabindex=\"0\">motif<\/span> to worldwide attention.<\/span><\/p><div><p><strong>Vetala in the Vetala-pancha-vimsati and the Kathasaritsagara<\/strong><\/p><p>The two central literary sources for <em>Vetala<\/em> are the <em>Vetala-pancha-vimsati<\/em> (Twenty-Five Tales of the Vetala) and the <em>Kathasaritsagara<\/em> (Ocean of the Streams of Story, 11th century). In the Vetala-pancha-vimsati, the Vetala is portrayed as a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A spiritual being to which harmful or ambivalent agency is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">demon<\/span> that inhabits a dead body and compels a king to exchange riddles with him at night.<\/p><p>The king must retrieve the corpse anew for each incorrectly answered question; each time the Vetala leaves the body and hangs itself from a tree once more.<\/p><p>The framing is erotically tinged and folkloric: the Vetala offers the king an erotic insight for each riddle answer he bests.
