<em>Pwca<\/em>) is the most prominent trickster figure of the Celtic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The transmission of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>, a shapeshifter appearing as a black horse, goat, hare, dog, or in human form.<\/p><p>Its moods are unpredictable: it may take people on wild rides through the night (leaving them alive or dead), protect good harvests or ruin them after Samhain, and mislead the wise through bad counsel.<\/p><p>The English &#8220;Puck&#8221; (Shakespeare, <em>A Midsummer Night&#8217;s Dream<\/em>) and the Cornish &#8220;Pixie&#8221; derive their names from the P\u00faca. Having become a defining literary figure, it often loses its darker aspects in popular perception. In Irish tradition it remains ambivalent: comic and dangerous at once, a being of the threshold between order and chaos.<\/p><div><p><strong>Welsh Pwca and Irish P\u00faca, etymological continuity<\/strong><\/p><p>The Celtic trickster being is recorded in several variants. In Welsh it is called <em>Pwca<\/em> (also Piwca), in Irish <em>P\u00faca<\/em> or Pooka. These name variants point to a shared Celtic source that differentiated regionally.<\/p><p>The Welsh Pwca is often depicted as a goblin-like being, playful and sometimes malicious but rarely lethal. The Irish P\u00faca shares similar traits but is often larger and more dangerous, sometimes appearing in horse form.<\/p><p>Etymological studies suggest the roots may lie in Celtic names for gods or <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span>, although a secure derivation is difficult.
