Many systems of folk belief assume that harmful influences must enter an area in order to take effect. A drawn boundary is meant to prevent precisely this entry.

The circle is regarded as a particularly suitable boundary form because it has no beginning and no end. A closed line has no point at which the boundary would be open. This seamlessness was understood as an image of complete protection.

Important in many traditions is unbrokenness. If the line is interrupted at one point, the circle is regarded as ineffective, because the boundary is open there. This idea makes clear that what matters is the closed form itself.

The chosen material carries a meaning of its own. Salt, ash and iron were themselves regarded in many cultures as warding substances. A circle made of such material combined the idea of the boundary with the idea of an effective substance.

The act of drawing also carried weight. The circle came into being through a deliberate movement, often accompanied by words. This connection of movement, line and word turned the drawing into a ritual and not merely a marking.

The idea described here is a cultural-historical explanation for why the circle was regarded as protective. It follows the same basic idea of the deliberately drawn boundary that also underlies the European protective circle.

Application in Ritual and Everyday Life

In its application the protective circle is usually drawn in a particular sequence. Often a fixed direction is handed down, for instance in the sense of the sun’s course, and a clear starting and closing point of the line.

In ritual contexts a spoken text often accompanies the drawing. Word and movement then belong together, and the circle counts as complete only when the line is closed and the spell is finished.

In everyday life the circle was drawn above all at places regarded as endangered, for instance around a cradle, a sickbed or a stable. The line was meant to demarcate a particular area for the duration of a night or an occasion.

Permanent circles are rarer but known. Thus a building could be walked around once and thereby symbolically encircled, or a line remained as a marking. In such cases the circle worked as a lasting boundary.

The dissolving of the circle was in some traditions a step of its own. The area was to be left again only after a deliberate opening. In other customs the circle simply passed away with the wiping out of the line.

There is no uniform ritual order for the protective circle. The precise form depended on region, tradition and occasion, which folklore research has recorded several times.

Related Forms of Protection and Demarcation

The protective circle stands in close kinship with threshold protection. Both work with the idea of a boundary. While the circle encloses an entire area, threshold protection secures the single opening through which an area is entered.

There is also a connection with the scattering of salt and iron filings. These substances were often spread along a line and thereby connect the idea of the boundary with the idea of an apotropaic substance.

From the pictorial amulet the circle differs clearly. Eye, hand or animal motifs work through a recognizable image. The circle, by contrast, is a pure form and an act. It belongs to the geometric, not the pictorial group of the protective symbols.

The protective circle is to be distinguished from the circular ornamental or pictorial motif. A painted or engraved circle as decoration does not necessarily carry a protective interpretation. What is decisive is the function as a deliberately drawn boundary.

A boundary also exists with the consecrated precinct in religious law. Sacred areas are likewise demarcated, but their boundary serves the legal and cultic designation and not primarily warding off.

Placing it within this neighborhood helps to define the protective circle precisely. It is a deliberately drawn, closed boundary line with a warding function and differs from pictorial amulets, ornamental motifs and consecrated precincts.

Present-Day Reception of the Protective Circle

In modern esotericism the protective circle is a frequently used element. In neopagan and ritual-magical currents, the drawing of a circle is understood as the opening of a ritual act and is in part connected with fixed sequences.

These present-day practices often invoke historical models, but reshape them. The study of religion describes them as an independent modern tradition that differs from the older folklore customs.

Effects are sometimes attributed to the modern circle rituals. Such assurances are not proven. The circle is to be understood as a cultural symbol and as a ritual act, not as a verifiable means of protection.

In popular culture the protective circle frequently appears in films, novels and games, usually as a circle drawn around a person who wants to secure themselves against a threat. These depictions take up the motif and exaggerate it.

For the study of religion, the protective circle is a clear example of a principle of protection that rests on space and boundary. It shows how a simple geometric idea arose independently in many cultures.

Anyone who engages with the protective circle today finds in it above all a topic of cultural history. A sober approach separates the documented history of the custom from modern promises of effect that do not withstand examination.

In the study of material culture, circle lines scratched or painted into the ground are an object of investigation, insofar as they have been preserved. They are recorded and interpreted as testimonies of past customs. In this way the protective circle remains tangible even where the underlying belief is no longer alive.

Literature (Selection)

Liselotte Hansmann, Lenz Kriss-Rettenbeck: Amulett und Talisman.
