class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>, it protects the traveller on the way, purifies rooms through incense, keeps harmful beings away from thresholds and strengthens the person who carries it on the body.<\/p><p>Mugwort is part of the <a href=\"\/en\/protective-substances-and-plants\/\">protective substances and protective plants<\/a> and differs from more specific protective plants such as <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/st-johns-wort\/\">St. John&#8217;s wort<\/a> in that, in <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span>, it is not used against a particular class of beings but is regarded as a general strengthening protection: it reinforces the protective space of the bearer and of the threshold without being fixed to a single target of effect.<\/p><p>As with all protective plants, the following applies: this concerns solely the folkloric <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" In East Asia mugwort is also known as mugwort in moxibustion, but in that context as a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A regulated sequence of symbolic actions with religious or cultural significance.\" tabindex=\"0\">ritual<\/span> means rather than a means of protection.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgs-beifuss-s1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"iwgs-beifuss-s1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgs-beifuss-s1h elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"iwgs-beifuss-s1h\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Origin and tradition<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iw-beifuss-s1-bw e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"iw-beifuss-s1-bw\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-iwgs-beifuss-s1t elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"iwgs-beifuss-s1t\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span> of mugwort as a protective plant can be traced in Europe at least to the early Middle Ages.<\/p><p>In the Anglo-Saxon <em>Nine Herbs Charm<\/em>, preserved in the Lacnunga manuscript of the 10th century, mugwort (<em>mucgwyrt<\/em>) stands in first place: &#8220;Remember, Mugwort, what you made known, what you established in your greatest power.&#8221; The charm calls it the mother of all herbs and the oldest protection against exhaustion and evil <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A bodiless being to which agency in the world is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirits<\/span> on journeys.<\/p><p>In German folk tradition the name girdle herb derives directly from the protective practice: travellers, <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A person who undertakes a religiously motivated journey to a holy place.\" tabindex=\"0\">pilgrims<\/span> and soldiers sewed mugwort into their belts to ward off exhaustion and to protect themselves against the dangers of the road.<\/p><p>In times when roads were regarded as dangerous places where highwaymen and spirits lay in wait alike, this practice combined physical protection with protection against unseen threats.<\/p><p>In Scandinavia mugwort belongs to the Midsummer plants that were gathered on St. John&#8217;s night and are said to unfold their highest protective effect at the turn of the year. In Swedish and Norwegian folk-<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A handed-down action regularly repeated within a community.\" tabindex=\"0\">custom<\/span> literature it appears as a plant that was tied to stable doors and house entrances.<\/p><p>In Japan and China mugwort is known as yomogi and mugwort and holds a strong ritual function in <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Religious ideas and customs that are widespread in everyday life.\" tabindex=\"0\">popular belief<\/span>. The two together explain its broad protective function.<\/p><p>As a strengthening plant it is considered especially for travellers: sewn into the belt or the shoes, it is said, according to the Anglo-Saxon and German sources, to ward off tiredness and exhaustion, but also to stabilise the inner strength of the bearer against external influence.<\/p><p>Whoever is strong, so the folkloric logic runs, can less easily be attacked by beings that exploit weakness.<\/p><p>As an incense plant, mugwort works through its intense, somewhat bitter smoke. As an incense plant dried mugwort is burned on glowing coals or directly as a bundle; the smoke fills the room and is meant to purify it.<\/p><p><span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The passing on of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">Tradition<\/span> recommends St. John&#8217;s Day or the Midsummer night as the gathering time, when the plant is said to have its highest power.
