The English word <em>nightmare<\/em> and French <em>cauchemar<\/em> carry this word to the present day.<\/p><div><p><strong>A female figure in Norse and German <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The transmission of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p>The Mahr appears in Norse and German <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The transmission of knowledge and narratives across generations.\" tabindex=\"0\">tradition<\/span> frequently as a female nocturnal figure. In <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Icelandic scholar (1179-1241); author of the Prose Edda and the Heimskringla.\" tabindex=\"0\">Snorri Sturluson<\/span>&#8216;s <em>Prose Edda<\/em> (composed around 1220), fairy-tale demonic female figures are described whose nature oscillates between goddess and demoness.<\/p><p>While the Edda does not name the Mahr explicitly, the nocturnal visitations by female beings described there correspond to the Mahr accounts documented in later sources. The knotted, tangled strands of the mane were called <em>Mahrlocken<\/em> or similar terms and interpreted as visible proof of a nocturnal visit.<\/p><p>This belief explains a real agricultural observation: horses can indeed be found sweating and with matted manes in the morning, whether from illness, restlessness, or parasites.
