The ancient curse tablets, lead tablets bearing curse texts that were deposited in springs, wells or graves, survive in the archaeological tradition in several thousand examples.

The most important collected editions are the Tabellae Defixionum (Audollent 1904) and the more recent editions by Daniel Ogden (“Greek and Roman Necromancy”, 2001) and Christopher Faraone.

The curse tablets offer a rare and direct insight into the everyday practice of magic in the ancient world; they were not composed by professional magicians but by private individuals in concrete conflict situations.

Medieval transitions

In the Christian Middle Ages, the tradition of harmful magic migrated from the public sphere into folk magic. The witch-trial records of the early modern period document rich conceptions of harmful magic: binding spells, cursing rituals, sympathetic harm worked through wax figures or personal objects.

How much of this was historical practice and how much a construct of the interrogation setting is the subject of modern witchcraft scholarship (Stuart Clark, “Thinking with Demons”, 1997; Wolfgang Behringer, “Hexen und Hexenprozesse in Deutschland”, 1988).

Folk magic worldwide

Conceptions of harmful magic are attested across cultures in almost all societies that are well documented in religious history, from African concepts of witchcraft through Asian voodoo-like practices to Indigenous American traditions of harm magic.

Scholarship sees in this constancy not merely cultural diffusion but a universal psychological function: harmful magic is a form of explanation and intervention for conflicts and injustices in which direct legal or social means do not apply.

Ethical and legal assessment

Harmful magic was often punishable in ancient and medieval legal systems; the Roman Lex Cornelia (1st century BCE) expressly prohibited the practice, as did medieval canon law.

In modern legal systems the practice itself is not punishable (because it is held to be ineffective), but concrete damage caused in the course of harmful magic (property damage, threats, stalking) can be prosecuted under criminal and civil law.

From the iWell Guard perspective, harmful magic is a practice that is clearly to be rejected on ethical grounds; we report on it as a phenomenon of religious history without any recommendation for use.

Standard literature (comparative religious studies):

Anti-witchcraft rituals and apotropaic magic

Apotropaic (defensive) practices arose in parallel against harmful magic. The customary practice of the German-speaking world, documented by Willem de Blécourt and other authors of ethnographic witchcraft research, worked with blessings, healing herbs and counter-curses to neutralize the harm done by witches.

In the African context, nganga and diviners operate similarly: they diagnose harmful magic and break it with counter-magic and ancestor invocation. This ethical dimension shapes religious consciousness to this day: legitimate magic is directed against illegitimate harmful magic.
