From this attribution grows a literary tradition reaching from the <em>Sefer ha-Razim<\/em> through the <em>Clavicula Salomonis<\/em> to the <em>Lemegeton<\/em>.<\/p><h2 id=\"legendenbildung\">Formation of the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An edifying narrative, usually about the lives of saints.\" tabindex=\"0\">Legend<\/span><\/h2><p>The Hebrew Bible endows Solomon with incomparable wisdom in 1 Kings 4. As early as the 1st century AD, the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus reports (<em>Antiquitates Judaicae<\/em> VIII) that Solomon left behind oaths, incantations and a book of healing.<\/p><p>In the pseudepigraphical writings the topos takes shape: Solomon rules over demons with a signet ring, compels them to build the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A structure that serves the veneration of one or more deities.\" tabindex=\"0\">Temple<\/span> and knows every one of their secrets. From this stem three great lines of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special actions or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magical<\/span> texts develop.<\/p><h2 id=\"testament\">Testament of Solomon<\/h2><p>The <em>Testament of Solomon<\/em>, probably compiled in Palestine or Egypt in the 1st to 4th century, is the oldest surviving Christian source of Solomonic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special acts or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magic<\/span>.<\/p><p>In narrative form, the text describes how Solomon, through an <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In the Abrahamic religions, a heavenly messenger being of God.\" tabindex=\"0\">angelic<\/span> gift in the shape of a signet ring, questions demons; each names its name, its sphere of influence and the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In the Abrahamic religions, a heavenly messenger being of God.\" tabindex=\"0\">angel<\/span> able to compel it. The list comprises 36 decan demons associated with illnesses and afflictions of the soul.<\/p><p>The schema, <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A spiritual being to which harmful or ambivalent effect is attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">demon<\/span>, effect, binding angel, will reappear centuries later in the Goetia.<\/p><h2 id=\"sefer-ha-razim\">Sefer ha-Razim<\/h2><p>Within the Jewish sphere, the <em>Sefer ha-Razim<\/em> (Book of Secrets), probably compiled in the 3rd to 5th century, gathers seven heavens and their angelic choirs. The practice uses angelic names for healing, protection and the gaining of knowledge, yet remains bound to strict rules of purity and to the praise of God.<\/p><p>The <em>Sefer Raziel ha-Mal&#8217;akh<\/em> (compiled in the medieval period, printed in Amsterdam in 1701) continues this line and supplies the most important models for later kabbalistic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special acts or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magic<\/span>.<\/p><h2 id=\"clavicula\">Clavicula Salomonis<\/h2><p>The <em>Clavicula Salomonis<\/em> (Key of Solomon) emerges in the 14th and 15th centuries on the basis of Greek and Hebrew sources and spreads above all in Latin, Italian and French manuscripts.<\/p><p>It is a practical manual: preparation of the magician (fasting, purification, silence), production of the pentacles on parchment made from virgin animal skin, <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Ritual act by which an object, place or person is handed over to the religious sphere.\" tabindex=\"0\">consecration<\/span> of the tools (wand, sword, sickle, lamp), <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The supplicating or conjuring address to a deity or power.\" tabindex=\"0\">invocation<\/span> of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In the Abrahamic religions, a heavenly messenger being of God.\" tabindex=\"0\">angels<\/span> and spirits.<\/p><p>At its centre stand 44 pentacles, seven per planet. The Clavicula is a theurgic-ceremonial work: it calls spirits through angelic aid and in the name of God, not through coercion.<\/p><h2 id=\"lemegeton\">Lemegeton<\/h2><p>In the 17th century an unknown editor in England compiled five separate manuscripts into the <em>Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis<\/em>: Goetia, Theurgia-Goetia, Ars Paulina, Ars Almadel, Ars Notoria.<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/iwell-guard.com\/en\/goetia\/\">Goetia<\/a> with its 72 demons is the best-known part and at the same time forms the contrast to the older <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In the Abrahamic religions, a heavenly messenger being of God.\" tabindex=\"0\">angel<\/span>-oriented Solomonic line: here the magician calls demons, compels them with the names of God, attains knowledge and power, and dismisses them respectfully.<\/p><p>The textual basis derives in part from Johann Weyer&#8217;s <em>Pseudomonarchia Daemonum<\/em> (1577).<\/p><h2 id=\"grand-grimoire\">Grand Grimoire and Later Forms<\/h2><p>In the 18th and 19th centuries, popular editions surface in France and Germany: <em>Grand Grimoire<\/em>, <em>Grimorium Verum<\/em>, the German <em>Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses<\/em>.<\/p><p>They dilute the Solomonic tradition into treasure-hunting, love magic and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"In the Christian-medieval tradition, a formal contract between a human and a demon, often signed in blood.\">pact<\/span> instructions. <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"British magician (1875-1947); founder of the Thelemic tradition (Liber AL, 1904).\">Aleister Crowley<\/span> publishes the English Goetia edition (<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"Collective manuscript of early-modern ritual magic, five books (Goetia, Theurgia-Goetia, Ars Paulina, Ars Almadel, Ars Notoria); 17th century.\">Lemegeton<\/span> I) in 1904 on the basis of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers (1854-1918); co-founder of the Golden Dawn, translator of the Goetia.\">Mathers<\/span>&#8216; translation; with this the Solomonic tradition reaches modern <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Engagement with hidden forces and practices beyond recognised science.\" tabindex=\"0\">occultism<\/span>.<\/p><h2 id=\"charakteristika\">Shared Structures<\/h2><p>Across the centuries, the Solomonic tradition shares several features: the central place of divine names (<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"The four Hebrew letters of the divine name YHWH, used in a magical-mantric manner in Jewish mysticism.\">Tetragrammaton<\/span>, <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"In Kabbalah, the 72-fold name of God, derived from Exodus 14:19-21; the basis of a hierarchy of 72 angels.\">Shemhamphorasch<\/span>), strict preparation of the magician, a clearly demarcated ritual space (circle and triangle), an explicit hierarchy of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"An incorporeal being to which effects in the world are attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">spirit<\/span> beings, and the duty of an honourable dismissal.<\/p><p>Whoever works with Solomonic <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special acts or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magic<\/span> moves, whether they perceive it or not, within a <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic study of God and the doctrines of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theological<\/span> space that legitimises the working only under the sign of a higher divine authority.<\/p><h2 id=\"quellen\">Sources<\/h2><ul><li><span data-nosnippet>Joseph H.
