The tradition combines Jewish demonology with early modern Hermeticism.<\/p><p>At iWell Guard, we treat the Goetia on the one hand as a phenomenon in the history of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic discipline that studies religions comparatively and without confessional commitment.\" tabindex=\"0\">religion<\/span> with a dense corpus of sources and a long reception history, and on the other hand as a methodological reference point for the later ritual-magical tradition of Europe.<\/p><p>The individual demons of the Goetia have their own entries in our lexicon with hierarchy, the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"Compilation manuscript of early modern ritual magic, five books (Goetia, Theurgia-Goetia, Ars Paulina, Ars Almadel, Ars Notoria); 17th c.\">Lemegeton<\/span> (Lesser Key of Solomon) is a compilation work from the 17th century comprising five parts: Goetia, Theurgia-Goetia, Ars Paulina, Ars Almadel, and Ars Notoria.<\/p><p>The Goetia is the first and most widely received part. The other parts deal with <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"In the Abrahamic religions, a heavenly messenger being of God.\" tabindex=\"0\">angelic<\/span> and mediating beings, with temporal constellations of the heavenly bodies, and with mnemonic practices; they are equally significant in the history of religion, but less present in practice-oriented reception.<\/p><p>The standard English edition from the early 20th century (<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers (1854-1918); co-founder of the Golden Dawn, translator of the Goetia.\">Mathers<\/span>, Crowley) effectively separated the Goetia from the other parts, a separation that has been reversed in scholarly editing since Joseph Peterson&#8217;s work (Weiser 2001).<\/p><div><p>The term <em>goeteia<\/em> itself carries a value judgment. In <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Transitional epoch between antiquity and the Middle Ages, roughly the 3rd to 7th century.\" tabindex=\"0\">late antique<\/span> philosophical literature, for example in <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"Late antique Neoplatonist (245-325 CE); main work De mysteriis; founder of systematic theurgy.\">Iamblichus<\/span>&#8216;s <em>De mysteriis<\/em>, it is used as a delimiting counter-concept to <em>theurgia<\/em>, which is regarded as the legitimate, god-near form of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special actions or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magical<\/span> action.<\/p><p>Goetia here denotes the lower form of <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Practices that seek to intervene in the course of events through special acts or formulas.\" tabindex=\"0\">magic<\/span> that works with impure spirits, in contrast to the pure ascent practice of <a class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" href=\"\/en\/theurgy\/\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"Higher ritual-magical practice for connecting with gods or higher spirits; in Neoplatonism (Iamblichus) a counter-concept to the lower goetia.\" style=\"color:inherit;text-decoration:none\">theurgy<\/a><\/a>.<\/p><p>This <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Epoch of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BC to 600 AD.\" tabindex=\"0\">ancient<\/span> distinction was adopted by the <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"Compilation manuscript of early modern ritual magic, five books (Goetia, Theurgia-Goetia, Ars Paulina, Ars Almadel, Ars Notoria); 17th c.\">Lemegeton<\/span> itself: the second part is called, not by chance, <em>Theurgia-Goetia<\/em> and deals with a middle class of spirits that are partly friendly, partly hostile in disposition. The Goetia in the narrower sense works exclusively with the 72 listed demons from the first part.<\/p><p>Anyone approaching the Goetia in practice should keep the historical layering in view: behind the 72 <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"A spiritual being to which harmful or ambivalent effects are attributed.\" tabindex=\"0\">demon<\/span> names stand biblical, Jewish-<span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"Standing outside the recognized canon.\" tabindex=\"0\">apocryphal<\/span>, Mesopotamian, Hellenistic, and medieval Arabic predecessor figures.<\/p><p>Bael, Asmoday, Astaroth, and Belial are not an invention of the 17th century; they carry sediments of meaning from two millennia of religious history.
