These modern readings are theologically far removed from the original, yet psychologically functionally similar: an invisible, powerful force that controls humanity.<\/p><div><h3>Etymology and Gnostic Conceptual Formation<\/h3><p>The term <em>arch\u014dn<\/em> (plural <em>archontes<\/em>) in <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The era of Greek and Roman culture, roughly 800 BCE to 600 CE.\" tabindex=\"0\">Classical<\/span> Greek initially means &#8220;ruler&#8221;, &#8220;magistrate&#8221; or &#8220;chief official&#8221;. They are not merely evil, but existentially ignorant: they do not know that a higher reality exists.<\/p><p>In David Icke&#8217;s popular (but non-Gnostic) literature, Archons\/reptilians are portrayed as earthly, present, shape-shifting entities that control elite families. In Robert Monroe and other out-of-body experience literature, Archons are described as &#8220;loosh stealers&#8221; or emotional-energy parasites. These variants share the idea that higher intelligences exploit humanity without it noticing.<\/p><div><h3>The Apocryphon of John and the Seven Archons<\/h3><p>The <em>Apocryphon of John<\/em> (Codex II,1 of Nag Hammadi, with three parallel versions in Codex III,1, Codex IV,1 and Codex Berolinensis 8502) is the most detailed Gnostic account of the doctrine of the Archons.<\/p><p>Yaldabaoth, also called Saklas or Samael, emerges from a failed act of creation by Sophia and in turn creates seven planetary Archons for himself as co-rulers.<\/p><p>These seven are assigned to the seven ancient planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) and control the cosmic spheres through which the soul passes on its ascent. Scholarly and <span class=\"iwg-fachbegriff\" data-tooltip=\"The academic study of God and the doctrines of a religion.\" tabindex=\"0\">theological<\/span> research has intensively examined the Gnostic original; the modern variants are less academically researched.<\/p><div><h3>State of the Sources and Academic Research<\/h3><p>The Nag Hammadi library was found in 1945 in Upper Egypt in thirteen codices containing a total of 52 writings. The critical edition was published in 1972 to 1984 by James M.
